Omschrijving

- is van belang vanwege de ouderdom;

- is van belang als representatief voorbeeld van een deels in structuur, deels in detail gaaf bewaard gebleven aanleg in landschapsstijl;

- is, ondanks de latere inkorting, van belang als kenmerkend eerste helft 19de-eeuws tuinontwerp dat op grond van stijlkenmerken aan L.P. Roodbaard wordt toegeschreven;

- is van belang vanwege de aanwezigheid van solitairen en boomgroepen uit de tijd van de aanleg;

- is van belang vanwege de functioneel/ruimtelijke relatie met de andere onderdelen van het complex;

- heeft ensemblewaarde vanwege de harmonieuze samenhang tussen de samenstellende onderdelen;

Description

The FORECOURT nowadays consists of a garden with several monumental chestnuts and oaks and some older shrubs (including boxwood). A path (yellow clinkers) leads in a curve from the entrance gate to the main entrance, where it widens and continues towards the rear. Originally there was a forecourt square - its layout is however not known. This square gave way before World War II to the current layout. REAR GROUNDS with Roodbaard layout, consisting of (the remnant of) a large pond with bridge, (grass) beds, semi-hardened winding paths, monumental planting and surprising vistas.

Original situation. The original layout consisted of an S-shaped winding pond with two undulating bridges with rustic wooden railings. Furthermore there were two arbours - one at the front and one at the rear of the layout -, a vegetable garden, an apple orchard, a hothouse with forcing frames, a chicken run and a gardener's lodge. Everything situated on grounds largely enclosed by a watercourse. Within the layout an alternation of winding paths and beds; the whole furnished with trees and shrubs. Current situation. The front part of the layout is relatively open. This is to provide a clear view over the garden from the house and to be able to optimally enjoy the sight of the house and its reflection in the pond from the garden. To enhance this effect the edges have been planted with tree groups, giving the garden the characteristic enclosed character for which Roodbaard is known. Within that enclosure unworn paths that are somewhat convex wind around, with a system of water drainage via pits, themselves winding around the water feature and the irregularly shaped beds. In combination with playfully planted groups of trees and shrubs, surprising vistas are thus created within the layout and towards the house. The most important of these is the sight line from the house over the pond to the rear part of the layout. A bridge lies over the narrowest part of the water feature, from where the walker is granted a view of the house and its reflection in the water. The bridge is accompanied on the east side by a weeping ash, on the west side by a meanwhile highly monumental bald cypress. For the rest the tree stock consists among others of oak, chestnut, beech, ash, lime, elm, poplar, willow, larch, acacia, walnut and plane tree. Which species belonged to the original assortment is not known due to the absence of a planting list. Customary in the designs of Roodbaard, who obtained his plant material among others from the Frisian firms Wybren Krijns from Joure and O.T. Bosgra from Bergum, were in any case annuals and perennials for the beds, an exotic such as the bald cypress and indigenous species such as oak, (red, green and weeping) beech, (weeping) ash, (red) chestnut, elm, lime, poplar, larch, acacia and plane tree. On the basis of their age the bald cypress and various beeches, oaks and limes must date from the time of the layout. The choice of assortment was determined to a large extent by form, leaf colour and colour change, period of leaf fall and position within the composition. The current tree stock is in part in need of rejuvenation. The grounds feature a great variety of hedgerow plants.

Valuation

Historical garden and park layout in landscape style, of general importance because of its cultural-historical and garden-historical value. The layout:

- is of importance because of its age;

- is of importance as a representative example of a layout in landscape style that is partly preserved in structure and partly in detail;

- is, despite the later truncation, of importance as a characteristic first half 19th-century garden design that on the basis of style characteristics is attributed to L.P. Roodbaard;

- is of importance because of the presence of specimens and tree groups from the time of the layout;

- is of importance because of the functional/spatial relationship with the other components of the complex;

- has ensemble value because of the harmonious coherence between the constituent components;

- is of importance because of its deep withdrawn location within the almost closed facade wall of the Voorstraat.
