Inleiding
De AANLEG met padenstelsel, grafvelden en graftekens van het historische deel van de gemeentelijke begraafplaats Essenhof met bijbehorende toegangspartij, dienstwoning en brug, alsmede een aula op de latere uitbreiding. Gelegen op het terrein van het voormalige landgoed Blauwhuis tussen de Dubbeldamseweg Zuid, de Mariastraat en de Nieuweweg. De aanleg van de begraafplaats in 1828 volgde op het Koninklijke Besluit van 1827, waarin werd bepaald dat er in het vervolg niet meer in kerken begraven mocht worden. De eerste aanleg, met eenvoudige rechthoekige perken en een grote diversiteit aan bijzondere 19de en 20ste-eeuwse (familie)graftekens en grafkelders, is ontworpen door J. Smits Jzn.
Omschrijving
De toegang tot het oudste gedeelte van de gemeentelijke begraafplaats wordt gevormd door respectievelijk een fors toegangshek en een brug met kleiner hek. De vijverpartij ten oosten van de entree is voorzien van begroeide eilandjes en maakte oorspronkelijk mogelijk deel uit van het oude landgoed. Het historische deel was bij de aanleg geheel omgeven door een gracht, waarvan het zuidelijk deel door de aanleg van een uitbreiding in de jaren dertig van de 20ste-eeuw gedempt is. Het beschermde deel van de begraafplaats bestaat uit rechthoekige, tussen rechte paden liggende grafperken, wat voor een stadsbegraafplaats uit die tijd een uiterst sobere inrichting is. De grafvelden bevatten vele enkele graven, gecombineerde graven en familiegraven, die zijn uitgevoerd in diverse materialen, zoals zandsteen, marmer, hardsteen, baksteen, smeed- en gietijzer. Een aantal familiegraven zijn uitgevoerd als grafkelder, andere worden door hekwerken omheind of zijn voorzien van een met beeldhouwwerk versierde tombe. Tot de oudste graftekens op de begraafplaats behoort die van de familie van der Dussen (1830). Opvallend zijn onder meer de gebeeldhouwde graftekens boven de graven van de indoloog prof. P.J. Veth (1895) en J.W. Beversen uit 1897. De van noordoost naar zuid-west lopende as, die begint bij de brug over de omringende gracht, wordt aan de zuid-westzijde beëindigd door de aula uit 1938-39 aan de rand van de 20ste-eeuwse uitbreiding. Vermoedelijk was de oorspronkelijke aanleg alleen langs de randen en langs de panden voorzien van bomen. Doorgeschoten grafbeplanting en het aanplanten van een grote variatie aan loof- en naaldbomen en struiken heeft de qua structuur sobere begraafplaats een sfeervol landschappelijk en romantisch aanzien gegeven. Op het historische deel zijn in de jaren vijftig, tachtig en negentig van de 20ste-eeuw een aantal verhoogde grafakkers aangelegd waardoor het karakter van dit deel sterk gewijzigd is. De zuidelijke grens van het beschermde deel loopt langs de paden die dwars op de aula staan en is op een bijgevoegde kaart aangegeven.

The protected part of the cemetery consists of rectangular burial plots lying between straight paths, which for a municipal cemetery of that period represents an extremely austere layout. The burial grounds contain many individual graves, combined graves and family graves, executed in various materials such as sandstone, marble, hardstone, brick, wrought and cast iron. A number of family graves are executed as burial vaults, others are enclosed by ironwork or are furnished with a tomb decorated with sculptural work. Among the oldest grave markers in the cemetery is that of the van der Dussen family (1830). Notable are among others the sculpted grave markers above the graves of indologist prof. P.J. Veth (1895) and J.W. Beversen from 1897. The axis running from north-east to south-west, which begins at the bridge over the surrounding moat, is terminated on the south-west side by the hall from 1938-39 at the edge of the 20th-century extension.
