Inleiding
De in 1938-1939 gebouwde AULA op de Algemene Begraafplaats Essenhof, onderdeel van het complex van de algemene begraafplaats, is gebouwd in een expressieve, aan de architectuur van S. van Ravesteijn verwante neo-barokke bouwstijl naar een ontwerp van de architect A.J. Argelo. Het gebouw staat aan de noordwestelijke rand van de uitbreiding van de in 1828 aangelegde begraafplaats. Het sluit de verbinding met het 19de eeuwse deel van de begraafplaats af en onderbreekt de noordwest-zuidoost georiënteerde zichtas. Het glas-in-lood in het gebouw is afkomstig uit het atelier van de glazenier Toon Berg. De aula is sinds de jaren tachtig niet meer als zodanig in gebruik.
Omschrijving
Het gebouw is opgetrokken in met schone baksteen bekleed beton, vanuit een organische, min of meer kruisvormige plattegrond en staat onder platte daken met uitkragende randen van beton. De veelal gebogen muren worden verlevendigd door op beton lijkende accenten van "articon".
Het vooraanzicht en de achterzijde zijn symmetrisch. Het ronde, centrale gedeelte is hoger opgaand. De voorzijde bevat een ingangsportaal met een onder een concaaf gewelfde betonnen luifel staande dubbele deur. In de convex gewelfde geveldelen aan weerszijden staan drie vensters met glas-in-lood in de rechtgesloten stalen ramen. De deels concaaf gewelfde zijgevels, die het portaal verbinden met het hoog opgaande centrale deel, is blind. Het hoog opgaande, cilindervormige centrale bouwdeel heeft een transparante bovenbouw (tamboer), die is ingevuld met in stalen ramen gevat glas-in-lood en wordt bekroond door een eveneens cilindervormige lantaarn. In de smalle verbindingsmuren met de driekwart-ronde "vleugels" staat een uit zes gestapelde ramen samengesteld venster. De vleugels bevatten onder de dakrand een fries van ronde vensters met diep in de betonnen omlijsting liggende ramen. Aan de achterzijde ligt tussen de vleugels een lage uitbouw met in het midden een dubbele stalen deur. Aan weerszijden bevindt zich een portiek met in het midden een dubbele rondboogdeur en in de er dwars opstaande muren een met glas-in-lood ingevulde, dubbele deur. Het inwendige van het gebouwtje is vrijwel ongewijzigd gebleven. In beide vleugels bevindt zich een trap naar een lage verdieping.

The AULA built in 1938-1939 on the Essenhof General Cemetery, part of the complex of the general cemetery, was built in an expressive neo-baroque building style related to the architecture of S. van Ravesteijn according to a design by architect A.J. Description
The building is constructed of concrete faced with fine brick, from an organic, roughly cruciform floor plan and stands under flat roofs with projecting concrete edges. The predominantly curved walls are enlivened by concrete-like accents of "articon".
The front elevation and rear are symmetrical. The round, central section is higher. The front contains an entrance portico with a double door beneath a concavely vaulted concrete canopy. In the convexly curved facade sections on both sides are three windows with stained glass in right-angled steel frames. The partly concavely curved side elevations, which connect the portico with the high rising central section, are blank. The high rising, cylindrical central building section has a transparent superstructure (drum), which is filled with stained glass set in steel frames and is crowned by an equally cylindrical lantern. In the narrow connecting walls with the three-quarter round "wings" is a window composed of six stacked windows. The wings contain beneath the roof edge a frieze of round windows with windows set deep in the concrete surround. At the rear, between the wings, is a low extension with a double steel door in the middle. On both sides there is a portico with a double round arch door in the middle and in the walls standing transversely to it a double door filled with stained glass.
The interior of the building has remained virtually unchanged. In both wings there is a staircase to a low storey.
