Omschrijving

Description

The HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT of Keppel consists of a number of characteristic components, namely: the landscape park to the north and south of the castle with a number of vistas and specimen trees between the two (partly filled-in) arms of the Oude IJssel and closed off with a moat on the village side, principally designed by Dirk Wattez in 1880; the triangular area to the north of the Oude IJssel and to the south of the road from Doesburg and Doetinchem which since 1774 and (in the late twentieth century) again has been planted with a landscape layout; the eighteenth-century Sterrenbos to the north of the road from Doesburg to Doetinchem and the 18th-century kitchen garden to the west of the village centre. The garden and park layout contains the following elements of historical importance:

- the medieval moat around the castle, in which an access dam is incorporated (see component 8 for this)

- the remainder of the medieval moat around the outer ward, now only visible behind the outbuilding (see component 3 for this)

- the wooden fish weir located to the southeast of the castle

- the vista from the front façade of the castle in a northerly direction over the lawn towards the bridge over the Oude IJssel and the Gouden Leeuw

- the vista from the northern wing in a northerly direction over the Doesburg-Doetinchem road towards the Sterrenbos

- the vista in a (north)easterly direction over the point of the moat towards the northern flood plain of the Oude IJssel and the triangular area with landscape layout

- the vista from the southeastern façade of the castle in a southerly direction over the IJssel valley

- the same vista but separated by a group of trees from the previous vista

- a vista in a westerly direction towards the water mill and the valley of the Oude IJssel

- the area to the northwest of the castle (the former outer ward and the forecourt) with a lawn and tall trees which conceal the service buildings from view. A curved path runs towards a footbridge with gate (see component 7 for this) and continues northwards along the edge of the area, behind the tennis court and the remaining moat along where it coincides with a straight avenue, a remnant of the eighteenth-century avenue structure around the castle.

- the area to the southeast of the castle, bounded by two (partly filled-in) arms of the Oude IJssel and on the north side by a straight avenue, a remnant of the eighteenth-century avenue structure around the castle. The pleasure wood with winding paths from Wattez's design is clearly recognizable. The wood itself was largely felled in World War II and replanted immediately afterwards.

- the Sterrenbos to the north of the Doesburg to Doetinchem road from the middle of the eighteenth century, which is bounded on the east side by the Ruurlose Allee. Five paths still lead to the hilltop. Three-quarters of the once circular path at the foot of the hill remain. One of the avenues offers a view of the castle.

- the kitchen garden to the west of the village centre. Trapezoidal area surrounded by water on three sides (the river and two ditches). On the fourth side the ditch was filled in in the 1950s. On eighteenth-century maps this area, which traditionally functioned as a kitchen garden for the castle, is shown with a division into plots and planted with (fruit) trees. On the area, which is now in use as a nursery, stand a tall glasshouse and a brick cold frame, both from the beginning of the 20th century.

Valuation

The GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the historic country estate Keppel is of general cultural-historical and garden-historical importance:

- because of the presence of medieval and eighteenth-century elements in the layout

- because of the presence of an eighteenth-century Sterrenbos, connected to the castle via one of the sight lines

- because of the presence of an eighteenth-century kitchen garden, functionally connected to the castle

- because of the largely preserved landscape park with vistas around the castle from 1880 designed by Dirk Wattez

- because of the visual spatial context in which the buildings have a conscious place
