The register's description

Inleiding:

Introduction:

The Werk aan de Roode Haan forms the southern termination of the Grebbelinie dike. As early as 1629 fortifications were erected at this location to resist the advancing Spanish army. These fortifications were reworked into the present defensive work in 1785-1886. In 1847 the work was further improved and in 1939 it was incorporated into the Valleistellung. From this period dates a heavily damaged concrete base of a cupola casemate.

Description

In 1745 and 1746 constructed earthen DEFENSIVE WORK, located at the southern end of the Grebbelinie dike. The work consists of an elongated earthen line embankment with a tenaillé trace. An earlier constructed lunette to the north of the present Valleikanaal has since disappeared. The dimensions of the work are 400 by 40 metres. On the work are still two boundary markers with the inscriptions O1 and O28.

Valuation:

The construction is of general importance because of:

Cultural-historical values as part of the Grebbelinie, as this was constructed over a period of 200 years in six phases. Of great importance because of its commemorative value because of its role during the combat operations in 1939-1940.

Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which is based on:

a. the system of inundation and access defence (18th, 19th and 20th centuries), b. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century) c. the advance post function during mobilization and combat operations 1939-1940

This concerns a complex which in its initial construction is an example of defensive works from the period phase 1: from 1744, construction of line dike and works.

Archaeological values because of the expected traces in the ground of trenches, anti-tank ditches and the like.

Ensemble value because of its location within the system of the Grebbelinie in general, in particular as part of the well-preserved line dike between the Werk aan de Roode Haan and the core of the municipality of Leusden. Also because of the functional and physical coherence of the components of the complex. Finally, there is a well-preserved/reasonably well-preserved relationship with the field of fire and inundation field.

The complex is rare because it is still an almost completely surviving example of an 18th-century defensive work in the Grebbelinie and as such is representative (characteristic) of this type of defensive work.

The work is well preserved because almost all the components belonging to it are still present in more or less recognizable form and function.
