The register's description

Inleiding:

Introduction:

The Grebbelinie is a waterline approximately 60 kilometres in length, which makes use of the wet conditions in the western, lowest-lying part of the Gelderse Vallei. It is a unique example of a waterline constructed in the eighteenth century. Because no major interventions have taken place in the structure of the line since then, the greater part of the line wall, the weirs and the earthen defensive works have been preserved. This section of the line dike is situated in the municipality of Amersfoort between the Vuydijk on the north side and the Werk bij Krachtwijk on the south side. It is therefore the most northerly preserved part of the entire line dike.

Description:

In 1745 and 1746 constructed earthen DEFENSIVE WORK, consisting of an earthen wall, constructed as a defensive wall. This section of the Liniedijk in the municipality of Amersfoort north of the Werk bij Krachtwijk is approximately 250 metres long.

The complex consists of the following components: 1. Construction of two earthen defensive works, namely the Liniedijk in the municipality of Amersfoort north of the Werk bij Krachtwijk and the Vuydijk 2. the Werk bij Krachtwijk 3. three casemates of the S3 type

Valuation:

The construction is of general importance because of:

Cultural-historical values as part of the Grebbelinie, as it has been constructed in six phases over a period of 200 years. Of great importance because of its memorial value owing to its role during the fighting in 1939-1940.

Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which is based on:

a. the system of inundation and access defence (18th, 19th and 20th century), b. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century) c. the advanced post function during mobilisation and fighting 1939 - 1940

This concerns a complex that in its original form is an example of defensive works from the period:

phase 1: from 1744, construction of line dike and works

Ensemble value because of its location within the system of the Grebbelinie in general, in particular as part of the still well-preserved line dike between the Jachthaven at the Eem and Werk bij Krachtwijk. Also because of the functional and physical coherence of the components of the complex. Finally, there is here a preserved/reasonably well-preserved relationship with the field of fire and inundation field

The complex is rare because it is still a virtually complete example of an 18th century defensive work in the Grebbelinie and as such is representative (characteristic) for this type of defensive work.

The complex is well preserved because virtually all its constituent parts are still present in more or less recognisable form and function.
