The register's description

Inleiding:

Omschrijving:

In 1799 aangelegd aarden VERDEDIGINGSWERK.

fase 4: 1799, versterking Franse Tijd

Introduction:

The Work at Krachtwijk was laid out in 1799 for the defence of the Vuydijk, which served as a water-line barrier between the 10th and 11th compartments. In 1939-1940, two casemates were built here as part of the fortification of the Grebbelinie. The work forms the northern closure of the entire line-dike. On the work there is still a boundary stone numbered O177.

Description:

Earthen DEFENSIVE WORK laid out in 1799. The work is located to the north of Hoogland, 500 metres to the northeast of the Eem.

The work consists of a conversion of the line-dike into a defensive work with two bastions on either side of the Vuydijk. The work has an area of approximately 188 metres between the corner points of the bastions and 90 metres in relation to the line-dike. The height of the work is 2.4 to 2.5 metres.

Valuation:

The construction is of general importance because of:

Cultural-historical values as part of the Grebbelinie, as it was laid out in six phases over a period of 200 years.

Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building art, which is based on:

a. the system of inundation and access defence (18th, 19th and 20th centuries), b. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century) c. the outpost function during mobilisation and military operations 1939-1940

This concerns a complex which in its first construction is an example of defensive works from the period:

phase 4: 1799, fortification during the French period

Ensemble value because of its location within the system of the Grebbelinie in general, in particular as part of the well-preserved line-dike between the Yacht Haven at the Eem and the Work at Krachtwijk. Also because of the functional and physical coherence of the components of the complex. The situation makes the work extra valuable because it is the northern closure of the line-dike in the north.

The complex is rare because it is a still virtually complete surviving example of an 18th-century defensive work in the Grebbelinie and as such is representative (characteristic) of this type of defensive work.

The complex is well preserved because virtually all of its component parts are still present in more or less recognisable form and function.
