Inleiding
Het betreft het voormalige HOOFDTOEGANGSHEK van de buitenplaats Gunterstein. Dit hoofdhek is tot stand gekomen bij de wederopbouw (1680-1681) van de ridderhofstad na de verwoesting door de Fransen. Aangenomen wordt dat de architect van het huis, Adriaen Dortsman, tevens het hek ontwierp. Tot aan 1940 heeft het hek vrijwel intact op zijn plaats gestaan. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn de hekpijlers omgereden. De zandstenen restanten alsmede één van de hekvleugels zijn daarna veiliggesteld. Op de plaats van het hek kwam een eenvoudig functioneel agrarisch hekwerk. Rond 2000 is het plan onntwikkeld om het hek te reconstrueren met gebruikmaking van de overgebleven stukken. In 2005 is op dit plan namens de Staatssecretaris van Cultuur door de Rijksdienst voor de Monumentenzorg bij brief d.d. 21 juli 2005, nummer RW-2005-1693, positief geadviseerd.
Omschrijving
Het hoofdtoegangshek, gelegen aan de Laan van Gunterstein, bestaat uit een gemetselde boogbrug/dam met keermuren. Naast de oostelijke keermuur bevinden zich de restanten van een trap naar het water. In het midden van de dam zijn de keermuren uitgemetseld tot zware pijlers. Deze pijlers waren opgemetseld en hadden een voet en kroonlijst van geprofileerde zandsteen. Onderdelen hiervan zijn bewaard gebleven. Van beide pijlers is bovendien de zandstenen bekroning bewaard gebleven. Deze bestaat uit een voet versierd met acanthusblad, een ingesnoerde cilindervorm waarvan de ineengestrengelde monogrammen MP (Magdalena Poulle) en AD (Adriaen Daam) zijn aangebracht, daarop een rand met parels en bloemen als een kroon. Tussen de pijlers bevond zich een eenvoudig smeedijzeren spijlenhek, waarvan de linkervleugel bewaard is gebleven.
Waardering
Het HOOFDTOEGANGSHEK van het complex historische buitenplaats Gunterstein is van algemeen belang vanwege:

Introduction
This concerns the former MAIN ENTRANCE GATE of the country estate Gunterstein. This main gate was created during the reconstruction (1680-1681) of the manor house after destruction by the French. It is assumed that the architect of the house, Adriaen Dortsman, also designed the gate. Until 1940 the gate stood virtually intact in its place. During the Second World War the gate pillars were knocked down. The sandstone remains as well as one of the gate wings were subsequently secured. At the location of the gate a simple functional agricultural fence was erected. Around 2000 a plan was developed to reconstruct the gate using the remaining pieces. In 2005 this plan was positively advised on behalf of the State Secretary for Culture by the Heritage Management Service by letter dated 21 July 2005, number RW-2005-1693.
Description
The main entrance gate, located on the Laan van Gunterstein, consists of a masonry arched bridge/dam with retaining walls. Next to the eastern retaining wall are the remains of a staircase leading to the water. In the middle of the dam the retaining walls are constructed as heavy pillars. These pillars were masonry-built and had a base and cornice of profiled sandstone. Portions of these have been preserved. Of both pillars the sandstone capping has also been preserved. This consists of a base decorated with acanthus leaf, a constricted cylindrical form on which the intertwined monograms MP (Magdalena Poulle) and AD (Adriaen Daam) are inscribed, upon it a rim with pearls and flowers like a crown. Between the pillars was a simple wrought-iron rail fence, of which the left wing has been preserved.
Valuation
The MAIN ENTRANCE GATE of the complex historic country estate Gunterstein is of general importance because of:
- its age;
- its architectural-historical value as an example of a gate from the last decades of the 17th century, attributed to Adriaen Dortsman and the clear relationship with the then client;
- its ensemble value (functional-spatial relationship) with the other components of the country estate as well as in relation to the other country estates and their gates along the Vecht.
