Omschrijving
Omschrijving

Description
Description
The COUNTRY HOUSE Het Zelle was built in 1792, commissioned by Jacob Engelbert Tilman Grothe. It is constructed of red brick, stands on a rectangular ground plan and is crowned by an encircling hipped roof covered with blue tiles. Dormer windows with pediments and side ornaments in all roof slopes. Two chimneys. The front section was raised higher after 1838 and stands as a screen before the building. The house consists on the front of a basement, piano nobile, first storey and attic; the first storey is absent at the rear. All windows are provided with shutters. The five-bay wide front facade is symmetrically arranged. A hard stone stoop with iron balustrade leads up to the front door with fanlight and surround. The windows of basement and piano nobile have straight lintels; those of the first storey are covered with a roll moulding. The windows of the piano nobile have a six-pane glazing, those of the first storey a four-pane glazing. The central bay is closed off by a pediment with dial upon which the date 1792 is inscribed. The rear facade has (replaced in 1947) twenty-eight-pane windows on the piano nobile. On the roof a weather vane with the date 1792.
The arrangement of the INTERIOR is as follows. Behind the front door lies a small vestibule which opens into a hall. At right angles to this stands a corridor parallel to the front facade. The hall and corridor are paved with marble slabs. The stuccoed ceiling of hall and corridor dates from 1838 and is decorated with profiled mouldings and floral ornaments in the centre. Above the doors to the Zaal, the present dining room and the former dining room are stucco ornaments applied, depicting respectively a basket with grapes, a ladder and a staff (Autumn), a basket with flowers, rake and a scythe (Summer) and a vase with flowers on a plinth, all late 18th century. On the right side of the hall is the Zaal to the width of two windows overlooking the forecourt and a window in the right side facade. Against the rear wall of the Zaal a 18th-century marble fireplace from Amsterdam was placed in the 20th century. On either side of the fireplace were passages to the rooms behind it, of which the left one has been closed off. On the left side of the hall is the dining room (formerly Sitting Room) to the width of two windows overlooking the forecourt. Against the left wall of the dining room stands a marbled wooden fireplace in early 19th-century forms. The window to the right thereof was blocked in 1947 for the benefit of a dumbwaiter. Stuccoed ceiling with profiled moulding with rosettes at the corners. In the rear part of the house are three rooms next to each other. The middle room, the former dining room, is provided with a black marble fireplace with white consoles against the right wall. The fireplace breast is decorated with coloured figural stucco work in the form of garlands and a rope to which a flower basket hangs. The room to the right thereof with a window overlooking the rear of the grounds and a glass door in the side facade, has a simple stuccoed ceiling and a fireplace against the wall with the former dining room. The room to the left of the former dining room was used as an office and is now fitted as a kitchen. The staircase is located in the left part of the house. It is provided with a rail with flat balusters. The staircase leads to the basement or cellar with storage and the storey with the bedrooms. The basement has a front and rear section, separated from each other by a corridor parallel to the front facade. All rooms, as well as the corridor, are covered with barrel vaults on timber beams. Exceptions are the kitchen and the room at the right front which are provided with a simple beam layer. All windows have internal and external shutters. The kitchen is located in the front part of the basement, fireplace against the outer wall on the left, sink with pump below the windows. Next to the kitchen is a former bedroom for the staff. In the rear section of the basement are storage cellars. The storey of the house, as far as the front part is concerned, is provided with bedrooms. The middle room has stucco decoration in neo-Renaissance style. The rear section separated by a corridor is largely used as an attic.
