Omschrijving complexonderdeel 6
De KLOOSTERDRUKKERIJ heeft, op hoofdlijnen, een L-vormige plattegrond en staat op de hoek van St. Michaëlstraat en Parkstraat te Steyl. De drukkerij staat centraal in het kloostercomplex, is opgetrokken in rode baksteen, heeft twee en drie bouwlagen met kap op de hoek van genoemde straten, op het achterliggende gedeelte één bouwlaag met in totaal elf sheddaken, de gevels zijn daar in grauwrode baksteen uitgevoerd. De vleugel langs de St. Michaëlstraat telt drie lagen met een met leidekking beklede kapverdieping en een kort, naar voren springend gedeelte ter hoogte van twee lagen met kap op de hoek van St. Michaëlstraat en Parkstraat. Een vergelijkbare vleugel staat parallel aan de Parkstraat, echter zonder kapverdieping. Op de hoek van beide straten is op de eerste verdieping een rondboognis met een beeld van St. Josef onder baldakijn geplaatst. Originele roedeverdeling in dito ramen op de derde en vierde bouwlaag in de vleugel aan de St. Michaëlstraat, sierpatroon van muizentand onder de ramen van de tweede bouwlaag en onder de dakrand, toepassing van ceramiek in de vensterbanken. De vleugel aan de Parkstraat is grosso modo verwant wat betreft materialisatie en indeling van de gevel; zadeldak met pannen gedekt. In de drukkerij bevinden zich o.m. de originele trappenhuizen. Korte tweelaagse, bakstenen vleugel ter lengte van acht traveeën, haaks op de vleugel langs de St. Michaëlstraat, onder met pannen gedekt zadeldak.
Waardering complexonderdeel 6
De kloosterdrukkerij van het St. Michaëlklooster op de hoek van St. Michaëlstraat en Parkstraat te Steyl vertegenwoordigt algemeen belang op basis van:
- de ouderdom;
- de functionele en historische betekenis voor het klooster;
- de zeldzaamheid.
Cultuurhistorische omschrijving
De kloosterdrukkerij leverde de drukwerken die voor de verspreiding van het Woord Gods (Verbum Deum) door de orde Societas Verbi Divini (Congregatie van het Goddelijke Woord) noodzakelijk waren. De missie verliep niet alleen via de paters en zusters, maar ging gepaard met geschriften. Die werden in de kloosterdrukkerij vervaardigd en vormden de papieren neerslag van het ideaal: verspreiding van het (geschreven) Woord. Het stichtingsmotief van de orde komt in de drukkerij tot uiting. In ruimtelijk en stedenbouwkundig opzicht alsook in functioneel verband kan de kloosterdrukkerij niet los worden beschouwd van de cultuurhistorische samenhang die in 'Steyl' zo nadrukkelijk aanwezig is. De drukkerij staat op een hoek en is in de uitwendige verschijningsvorm gericht op de aangrenzende open percelen en op het 'hoofdkantoor' van de orde SVD. Nergens in Nederland is een dergelijke dispositie met betrekking tot het religieus erfgoed aan te treffen. Er is hier sprake van uniciteit. De gaafheid is naar verhouding, het betreft immers een object van bedrijf en techniek, opmerkelijk goed behouden. De oude drukkerijfunctie vindt anno 2004 nog steeds plaats.

The MONASTERY PRINTING WORKS has, in outline, an L-shaped ground plan and stands at the corner of St. Michaëlstraat and Parkstraat in Steyl. The printing works stands centrally in the monastery complex, is built in red brick, has two and three storeys with a roof truss at the corner of the aforementioned streets, on the rear section one storey with a total of eleven shed roofs, the façades there are executed in greyish-red brick. The wing along St. Michaëlstraat has three storeys with a roof space covered with lead and a short projecting section at the height of two storeys with a roof truss at the corner of St. Michaëlstraat and Parkstraat. A similar wing stands parallel to Parkstraat, however without a roof space. On the corner of both streets, on the first floor a rounded arch niche with an image of St. Joseph under a baldachin has been placed. Original glazing bars in similar windows on the third and fourth storey in the wing on St. Michaëlstraat, decorative pattern of mouse-tooth dentil moulding beneath the windows of the second storey and beneath the roof edge, application of ceramics in the window sills. The wing on Parkstraat is roughly similar with regard to materialization and arrangement of the façade; gabled roof covered with tiles. In the printing works are found, amongst others, the original staircases. Short two-storey brick wing measuring eight bays in length, perpendicular to the wing along St. Michaëlstraat, beneath a gabled roof covered with tiles.

The monastery printing works of St. Michaël monastery at the corner of St. Michaëlstraat and Parkstraat in Steyl is of public interest on the basis of:
- the age;
- the functional and historical significance for the monastery;
- the rarity.
Cultural-historical description
The monastery printing works supplied the printed works necessary for the dissemination of the Word of God (Verbum Deum) by the order Societas Verbi Divini (Congregation of the Divine Word). The mission did not proceed only through the priests and sisters, but was accompanied by writings. These were produced in the monastery printing works and formed the paper manifestation of the ideal: dissemination of the (written) Word. The founding motive of the order is expressed in the printing works. In spatial and urban planning terms as well as in functional connection, the monastery printing works cannot be viewed separately from the cultural-historical context so strongly present in 'Steyl'. The printing works stands on a corner and in its external appearance is oriented towards the adjoining open plots and towards the 'headquarters' of the SVD order. Nowhere in the Netherlands is such a disposition concerning religious heritage to be found. This is a case of uniqueness. The integrity is, in proportion, for an object of business and technology, remarkably well preserved. The old printing works function still takes place in the year 2004.
