Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 2: HISTORISCHE PARK- EN TUINAANLEG.
- cultuurhistorische waarde vanwege de ouderdom, in het bijzonder de nog herkenbare middeleeuwse structuur;
- tuinhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een geometrisch formele aanleg waarbinnen enkele landschappelijke elementen zijn opgenomen;

Description
Description component 2: HISTORIC PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT.
The layout of the country estate is determined by the elongated form of the medieval reclamation land division. A structure of mutually perpendicular watercourses divides the land into smaller rectangular plots. Most plots are still used exclusively for utilitarian purposes. The largest open space, meadow, is located on the north and northeast side, adjoining the house. Through woodland planting, an enclosed character has now been created. Around the house this has the character of a park. Along the edges and in the northern part it consists partly of productive timber and partly of natural area. A number of sight lines have disappeared as a result of the woodland planting.
The older geometric layout includes first and foremost the DOUBLE MOATED HOMESTEAD with to the north of this the so-called BACK LANE. This Back Lane is the oldest sight line to the house from the Langbroekerdijk. A second older LANE runs along the east side of the house. These two lanes were connected to each other in the late 18th century by a LANE with a curved course which by its form can be considered landscape-style. Furthermore there is the so-called SHIP'S DITCH on the west side. This is one of the old access waterways.
The 18th-century formal layout includes the more or less symmetrical arrangement of the FORECOURT with the two outbuildings (although the orangery is in itself older) and the DRIVE with CROSS LANE. Originally the drive had a curved course. Only in the late 19th or early 20th century was it redirected so that it is perpendicular to the house. At the beginning of the drive stands a late 18th-century gate with brick piers in block pattern and crowned with shield-bearing griffins. After 1950 this was relocated from elsewhere and rebuilt at this point.
The forecourt came into being through expanding the original forecastle to the east. An older building next to the orangery was demolished and a new carriage house completed the symmetrical layout. Later the rectangular form was altered to the current U-shape by drawing two separate islands in the moat at the forecourt. The arrangement of the forecourt with the boxwood hedge is recent as is the sundial that stands there.
From the period of embellishments after 1735 there remain furthermore the GRAND CANAL which intersects the area north of the main house approximately halfway in cross direction, ending on the east side in a round CARP POND. The grand canal and the carp basin are bordered with a double row of oaks ("allée double"). The semicircular form of the moat on the north side of the house also dates from this period and was created by excavation. The location of the kitchen garden to the northwest of the house was also established in the 18th century. The kitchen garden incidentally has a 20th-century design.
During the course of the 19th century a transformation to a landscape layout takes place in the immediate vicinity of the house with large tree groups and a path pattern in combination with a SIGHT LINE SYSTEM originally with four sight lines (two of these, direction Kromme Rijn are planted at the end due to the traffic situation). Together with older sight lines, of which some have now also disappeared again, there currently remain four with the house as centerpoint: from the house over the drive, from the house to the Back Lane, from the house in a southeasterly direction (Botervat) and from the house to the Winding Path.
In the late 19th century remarkable elements for that time were added, namely already very late elements. These are the WINDING PATH on the east side which leads to the carp pond. On both sides a planting of historic ash stools is found and a couple of tree groups. And the ENGLISH GARDEN located in the northeastern part of the park. This self-contained parkland exhibits uneven terrain. The path layout has a winding design. Furthermore a meandering watercourse with an island. The lane which provides access to this parkland is planted with oaks.
Valuation
The HISTORIC PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT is of general importance because of:
- cultural historical value because of its age, in particular the still recognizable medieval structure;
- garden historical value as an example of a geometrically formal layout within which some landscape elements have been incorporated;
- ensemble value because of the functional-spatial coherence of the components.
