Inleiding

Introduction

On a site bounded by Apollolaan, Stadionweg, Noorder- and Zuider Amstelkanaal, an ensemble of interconnected buildings was constructed in 1933-34, consisting of a TENNIS AND EXHIBITION BUILDING 'Apollo' on the Apollolaan side, a CAFE-RESTAURANT on the Zuider Amstelkanaal side and a former DIRECTOR'S RESIDENCE on the Stadionweg side, designed by A. Boeken in the style of the Nieuwe Bouwen. The construction was designed in collaboration with W. Zweedijk. The colour scheme was designed by A. Komter. Originally the various building components had their own colour combinations and contrasting effects in order to enhance the openness and transparency of the construction both inside and outside, as well as through the use of aluminium paint (in the hall originally soft green (walls) with darker green (purlins), light blue (glass walls) with white and cream (ceiling panels) and ultramarine blue (soffit), dark grey (entrances) and light blue (doors and gates). The client was the N.V. Sportpark en Tentoonstellingsgebouw 'Apollo'. The steel construction of the hall, the residence and the annex was constructed by the Hollandsche constructiewerkplaatsen at Leiden. The cafe-restaurant with the pergola by de Vries-Robbé at Gorinchem.

N.B. In 1954 part of the Apollohall was separated for the benefit of the cinema 'Du Midi', designed by A. Bodon. In 1961, after a fire, it was completely rebuilt. On the site of the former outdoor gravel courts, the Apollo Hotel by A. Bodon was erected in the same year. The original transparent glass has since been replaced by frosted glass. During a recent renovation, the inscription APOLLOHAL executed in steel letters above the entrance was restored.

N.B.2 With regard to the CAFE-RESTAURANT, for the purposes of protection only the portion belonging to the original ensemble from 1933-1934 is relevant, which originally served as a canteen/refreshment facility for the Apollohall. Currently (2005) this section is mainly used as a reception and conference room of the Apollo Hotel. To the original portion of the cafe-restaurant dating from 1933-1934, a number of later extensions have been added which are of subordinate importance from the perspective of monument conservation.

Description

The entire complex is executed as a steel skeleton structure. The hall is built on a rectangular floor plan and consists of one storey covered by gently sloping overhanging roof surfaces: hollow terracotta tiles with a bimex layer and an aluminium finish and a central rooflight running lengthwise. The facades consist of cavity walls of gas concrete clad with fair-faced brickwork in the manner of a basement. The glass walls placed above these have steel mullions. On the long side facing Apollolaan, which is six bays wide, there are three large openings for the former function as an exhibition space. The long facade on the other side is provided with a lower brick annex with smaller openings which originally gave access to the changing rooms. On the short rear side there are smaller exits under a pergola running from the Apollolaan to the entrance of the restaurant. This pergola, originally open to the water, was later provided with a glass wall on the open side. The pergola is covered by a gently sloping glass roof. The short gable on the Stadionweg consists of a low annex in which two porticos with curved glass canopies are projected. The porticos are provided with swing doors in front of which steel outer doors have been placed, fitted with lattice work. The low annex is covered by a flat roof with a gently sloping canopy on raking steel purlins. In the corner between the hall and the residence there is another entrance, originally intended for the tennis players who could thus enter the hall directly.

Interior. The annex with the main entrances has on the inside a gallery with steel open-work balustrade which is accessible via two raking steel stairs with corresponding railings. The changing rooms are located on the north-eastern long facade. The hall is spanned by six welded portal trusses.

Director's Residence. The director's residence situated to the north-west in the complex also has a steel skeleton, but here the skeleton is filled in with brick walls. The residence consists of a ground floor and two storeys and is covered by a gently sloping and overhanging roof. The clearly distinguishable wall surfaces are alternated by large windows. On the front (north-west facade facing Stadionweg) the ground floor storey steps back. The upper storeys thus projecting beyond are supported here on iron columns. Here is the entrance (on the left) behind iron balustrade with next to it a large round, cross-divided window. The south-western facade shows on the first floor a window strip behind an iron balustrade. The second storey has in the left bay a round balcony projection with corresponding iron balustrade. The north-east facade has in the second bay a large vertical window. Next to this window (on the left) a chimney projecting above the roof. Behind the house the vestibule which connects the residence to the hall.

Cafe-restaurant. Built on a rectangular floor plan and consisting of a steel skeleton. Two storeys under a gently sloping and overhanging roof. At the rear of the building a third storey under a sloping overhanging roof, originally intended for staff. Glass portico in the short south-west gable behind the pergola covered by a curved roof overhanging at the sides. Above the entrance a circular window. Steel frames with differing glazing bars. The windows on the upper floor provided with sash windows. On the first floor a surrounding (on the front concrete) balcony on the water side supported on raking, riveted to the facade, double posts. Facade on the water side with two circular windows in the fifth and sixth bays.

Valuation

An ensemble from 1933-1934 consisting of the Apollohall, cafe-restaurant and director's residence in the manner of the Nieuwe Bouwen, of general importance on account of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value and its value for the history of building technique, as a particularly important ensemble for sports and cultural events and as an example of the early application of welded trusses with large free span. Also of importance as the most significant building in the oeuvre of A. Boeken. Town-planning value on account of its location at a principal juncture in Berlage's Plan-Zuid: at the intersection of the three most important waterways namely the Boerenwetering and the Noorder and Zuider Amstelkanaal.
