Inleiding

- de ouderdom;

- de betrekkelijk gave uitwendige staat en de geheel gave inwendige staat;

- belangwekkende interieur-elementen uit de bouwtijd, w.o. dat van winkel, kantoor en woonkamer;

- het sociaal-historisch en typologisch belang, met name als voorbeeld van de verveningsgeschiedenis in ons land;

Introduction

Peat worker's house (1916) with attached rear building (1929). In the peat worker's house including a shop with office, both dating from the construction period. The building stands with its front facade (south facade) on the Zuiderdiep. The extension with the rear building, amongst other things intended as a storage for peat extraction equipment, was carried out on the north side.

Description

The PEAT WORKER'S HOUSE built in red brick including shop and office was constructed in 1916 by contractor Kleinenberg on the instructions of Freerk Kamst (1865-1926) and his wife Henderika Beekman (1871-1951). The building has composite, rectangular floor plans whereby the front section has two storeys and is narrower than the second, being the brick rear building which is placed eccentrically and whose gabled roof is covered with black concrete tiles. The front section concerns the likewise black concrete tile-covered peat worker's house which is executed on the front and rear sides with a hipped roof and two chimneys built up on the ridge. The front facade of the peat worker's house has three bays, below in Flemish bond, on the upper storey in half-brick bond brickwork. In the centre a brick staircase with iron railings on either side leads to the front door with undivided fanlight. To the left and right of the front door are two composite windows: the left one has a three-part division with upper lights, the right one a two-part division with upper lights. Simple linear curved and circular decoration in the arched fields above windows and front door. The mezzanine is divided by three simple square windows, above this a broad unprofile list and gutter. The right side facade is provided with two windows with undivided fanlight and a double (kitchen) window with undivided fanlights (from 1962) and a window with undivided fanlight in the offset; in the rear facade on the ground floor a T-window and in the gable top a six-pane, lightly arched window with iron glazing bars (directly below the half-hipped roof end, above the eaves line of the rear building). The left facade has a window with fanlight, a divided basement window plus a window with undivided fanlight in the offset, followed by a window with fanlight and a double window as in the right side facade by the kitchen. The rear facade of the peat worker's house has a T-window on the ground floor and an arched window with six small panes on the upper storey. In the east corner of the peat worker's house and rear building stands a brick-built well. The rear building is accessed from the street side (on the west side) by means of a double wooden door. Internally the peat worker's house including shop and office has retained its original layout and structure: hallway; shop with shelving cases placed against the walls (divided with slender pilasters provided with capitals, the cases arched and timber-lined with six storage drawers within), wooden counter, painted ceiling (five panels between the beams, stencilled decoration in late Jugendstil); office with timber door, black-painted wooden fireplace mantel with the text "EIGEN HAARD IS GOUD WAARD", tiled rear wall and painted ceiling (five panels between the beams, stencilled decoration in late Jugendstil); upper room and (potato) cellar; living room with timber fireplace mantel and painted ceiling (five panels between the beams, stencilled decoration in late Jugendstil). The roof truss structure of the peat worker's house dates from the construction period (1916), is pegged and has dovetail joints.

The REAR BUILDING, positioned eccentrically with respect to the peat worker's house, is accessible on the east side by means of a wooden door with square window and divided fanlight, to the left of the door a nameplate is mounted ("P. HOLLANDER VERVENER") as well as two T-windows placed directly adjacent to one another, to the right of the wooden door two four-pane windows. The west facade or left side facade has a layout with four iron stable windows. The rear facade (north) has an arched six-pane window on the ground floor (left), in the gable top two six-pane windows and further right another small window; the windows in the rear facade are executed in iron. Internally amongst other things a simple timber roof truss structure from the construction period (1929). The rear building is laid in red brick (half-brick bond), has corbel stones under the gutter and a brick built high chimney on the north-east corner of the rear building. The timber extension with lean-to roof against the rear facade is not of monument value.

Valuation

The PEAT WORKER'S HOUSE (1916) WITH ATTACHED REAR BUILDING (1929) is of general interest on the grounds of:

- its age;

- its relatively good external condition and its entirely good internal condition;

- interesting interior elements from the construction period, including those of the shop, office and living room;

- its social-historical and typological importance, in particular as an example of peat extraction history in our country;

- experiential and sensory values at this location, not least caused by the peat lands stretching widely across on the other side of the Zuiderdiep.
