Inleiding
Smeedijzeren HEKWERK om de oude algemene begraafplaats aan de westzijde van de Boschstraat op het bastion "Het Ravelijn", waar in vroeger tijden het galgenveld was. Het hekwerk bestaat uit verschillende onderdelen waarvan de oudste vermoedelijk uit 1810 dateren. De bescherming betreft het toegangshek aan de Boschstraat (oostzijde), het aan de zuidzijde hiervan gelegen oostelijke hekwerk, en de hekwerken aan de zuid- en de westzijde van de begraafplaats. De toegang aan de westzijde stamt uit de tijd dat de begraafplaats ook door katholieken werd gebruikt. Zij maakten geen gebruik van de niet gewijde toegang aan de oostzijde.
Omschrijving
De toegang aan de Boschstraat bestaat uit betrekkelijk eenvoudige smeedijzeren draaihekken, geflankeerd door twee smeedijzeren pijlers. De voorzijden van deze pijlers bevatten symbolische voorstellingen van twee omgekeerde, gekruiste brandende fakkels en een slang die in zijn eigen staart bijt. De bovenzijde is gesierd met palmetten. Op de linker pijler de tekst "RUST", op de rechter "PLAATS". Aan de zuid- en westzijde een zwaar smeedijzeren hekwerk, bestaande uit om en om korte en lange spijlen met ronde pijlpunt, en drie regels. Op de verzwaarde stijlen een glad afgewerkte pijnappel. Aan de westzijde twee toegangshekken, bestaande uit brede smeedijzeren pijlers met daartussen dubbele draaihekken. De pijlers hebben diagonale spijlen met op de kruising een ronde schijf met bloemmotief, en worden beëindigd door een geprofileerd horizontale regel. De draaihekken zelf bestaan uit een samenstel van hele en halve cirkels, doorkruist door twee diagonale spijlen met op de kruising eveneens een bloemmotief, en aan de onderzijde korte spijlen.
Waardering
Smeedijzeren HEKWERKEN met twee smeedijzeren PIJLERS om begraafplaats zijn van algemeen cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde:
- als representant van de funeraire geschiedenis van Zaltbommel;
- vanwege de kenmerkende functie als omheining van de begraafplaats;
- vanwege de oorspronkelijke functie van het toegangshek aan de westzijde, dat gebruikt werd door katholieken;
- vanwege de vormgeving, uitvoering en decoratie van het hekwerk;
- vanwege vormgeving, uitvoering en decoratie van de smeedijzeren pijlers, die bovendien zeldzaamheidswaarde hebben vanwege het materiaalgebruik.

Introduction
Wrought-iron FENCING around the old general cemetery on the west side of the Boschstraat on the bastion "Het Ravelijn", where the gallows field was located in former times. The fencing consists of various components, the oldest of which probably date from 1810. The protection concerns the entrance gate on the Boschstraat (east side), the eastern fencing situated to its south, and the fences on the south and west sides of the cemetery. The entrance on the west side dates from the time when the cemetery was also used by Catholics. They did not use the unconsecrated entrance on the east side.
Description
The entrance on the Boschstraat consists of relatively simple wrought-iron swing gates, flanked by two wrought-iron pillars. The front sides of these pillars contain symbolic representations of two inverted, crossed burning torches and a serpent biting its own tail. The top is adorned with palmettes. On the left pillar the text "RUST", on the right "PLAATS". On the south and west sides heavy wrought-iron fencing, consisting of alternating short and long spikes with rounded points, and three rails. On the reinforced stiles a smoothly finished pine cone. On the west side two entrance gates, consisting of wide wrought-iron pillars with double swing gates between them. The pillars have diagonal spikes with a round disc featuring a flower motif at the crossing, and are terminated by a profiled horizontal rule. The swing gates themselves consist of an assembly of whole and half circles, crossed by two diagonal spikes with a flower motif also at the crossing, and short spikes at the bottom.
Valuation
Wrought-iron FENCES with two wrought-iron PILLARS around cemetery are of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical value:
- as a representative of the funerary history of Zaltbommel;
- on account of the characteristic function as enclosure of the cemetery;
- on account of the original function of the entrance gate on the west side, which was used by Catholics;
- on account of the design, execution and decoration of the fencing;
- on account of the design, execution and decoration of the wrought-iron pillars, which moreover have rarity value due to the material use.
