Inleiding

Description
Introduction
On a part of the estate Backershagen, landscaped setting SCHOOL COMPLEX for secondary education, the "Rijnlands Lyceum", designed in 1937-1939 by Jan Pieter Kloos (1905-2001) in the functionalist style of the Nieuwe Bouwen. The school was built on the initiative of lecturers from Leiden University to better prepare students for university, for which Dalton education was considered suitable, an educational movement that has existed in the Netherlands since the 1920s. Characteristic of this is that the school is regarded as a working community in which independence, contact between teachers and pupils, the interrelationship between subjects and in particular community spirit are encouraged. A typical architectural aspect for this educational system is the clear, light layout and generally broad Dalton corridor. Kloos translated this into a trapezoidal corridor, which enables pupils to move to other classrooms and facilitates mutual contact, and in the use of light colours (light yellow among others). The colour scheme has been partly altered. The school was the first large utilitarian commission of Kloos, which established his reputation.
In 1937-1939 Kloos already provided for phased construction, with an extension on the south-east side planned. Due to the war, its construction was postponed. The second phase was built in 1952 according to a slightly modified design by Kloos, also providing for the space needs that had grown in the meantime. The use of wooden frames then only partially matched the older part for economic reasons, while the construction was also less advanced (less flexible), as a result of which the monument values here concentrate especially in the architectural concept and in the design structure (broad corridor, classrooms on the light south side) and to a lesser extent in the intrinsic values of the actual materialisation/execution of the design. The facades on the south side were replaced by aluminium facades.
N.B. In 1979 the school was extended once more with an H-shaped corridor and classroom system in prefabrication on the north-east side according to a design by the architectural firm Kloos and Groosman. This extension is relatively recent and falls outside the scope of protection under the Monuments Act 1988.
Description
The oldest part from 1937-1939 is built on an L-shaped ground plan, formed by two wings: one slightly trapezoidal wing for the Dalton corridor with classrooms on either side and one for the (former) gymnasium/assembly hall, now library and recreation/theatre hall, the porter's lodge and a rest corridor, functions that are expressed in the facade appearance. This part of the school is, with the exception of the gymnasium and a connecting element between the wings, two storeys high and is fitted with a flat roof with overhang. The building is executed with a concrete structure, facades in greyish-yellow brick and steel windows and doors. The front facade is a relatively closed brick facade with on the left an extension with a concave facade and entrances on both sides of it. To the right of this a recessed single-storey closed connecting section forms the transition to the facade part with two window bands (steel frames and windows replaced by aluminium) consisting of small lower windows and larger upper windows. To the right of this follows one circular window and high up in the facade window bands of the (former) gymnasium/assembly hall.
The end facade on the north-west side is brick with three small horizontal windows. The facade on the south-west side consists at the location of the gymnasium of high steel facades behind which the supporting structure of tall slender pillars is visible. The ground floor is otherwise provided with a continuous window band above which is a large multi-paned window of the porter's lodge. At right angles to this facade, the facade of the trapezoidal classroom wing connects. The concrete plinth of this building section is set slightly back from the facade line. Above this, a brick parapet has been built in the north-western facade with large steel facades and for each classroom behind it an external door. The parapet of the upper floor is also brick with the lettering "RIJNLANDS LYCEUM" on top. A continuous window band (steel frames, windows) extends along the entire length of the facade. The long facade on the south-east side of this building section corresponds to this, except for the lettering. The relatively closed end facade is concave and entirely built of brick with in the middle two door facades, flanked by slender columns. Projecting concrete slabs, also finished in concave form, serve as a balcony for the fire escape and as a landing below, where this connects to a black and white tiled plateau.
At right angles to this building section connects the stairwell of the extension realised in 1952.
The interior is relatively intact. Behind the entrance is the stairwell with landing with a chimney in the stair shaft topped by two clocks. From the stairwell both trapezoidal Dalton corridors can be overlooked, flanked by slender round columns, behind which the classroom walls run with high-placed continuous window bands and doors with round windows. Chimney, columns and the round windows in the doors recall ship architecture. The physics and chemistry classrooms at the end of the corridor are equipped with authentic cabinets.
Besides the central stairs are corridors with toilets. Behind the right corridor connects a "rest corridor" with seating areas for pupils. In part of the gymnasium/assembly hall a level has been inserted to provide space for the library. The rear section is fitted with a stage. Behind the left corridor connects the stairwell of the 1952 extension.
The section from 1952 has a composite ground plan with a projection in connection with the older building volume and with the historical plot pattern. This wing is formed by a trapezoidal stairwell on the north side, to which a straight corridor with classrooms connects on the south-east side, ending in a second stairwell and a trapezoidal volume. From here, a rectangular gymnasium is accessible via a corridor.
The northern stairwell is provided with a concave front facade (now connection 1979 extension), glass facades in a convex rear facade and a mosaic (unsigned) and a red and black sgraffito by Nicolaas Wijnberg (born 1918) in the interior. The structure of the connecting section consists of corridors stacked on top of each other on the north-east side and with classrooms on the south-west side. In the eastern located trapezoidal building volume several classrooms connect. A connection has been made via a corridor to a gymnasium with a special construction of concrete arches in the interior, which continue as air arches in the exterior and under which the changing rooms are located.
