Inleiding

Introduction

Brick residential building designed in 1872. In the early 1880s, the famous physiotherapist Dr. J.G. Mezger occupied the building and the interior was embellished. The corner building, on the corner of the Amstel and Sarphatistraat, is located in the protected townscape of Amsterdam's city centre in a architecturally prominent position at the foot of the Amstelbrug and adjacent to the Amstelhotel situated on the other side of the bridge.

The building consists of a ground floor, first and second storey and an attic storey. Originally the layout below the first storey consisted of basement and piano nobile. In 1927 this purpose was changed to a café-restaurant, with the layout being altered from basement and piano nobile to a ground floor storey. On the rear side, on Sarphatistraat, an extension was then realised, with ground floor and first storey, intended for the café-restaurant.

Description

Residential building, 1872, with extension dating from 1927.

The front facade is built in brick and has an altered ground floor. The facade now contains on the ground floor the entrance door to the residential building and beside it a large window for the café. Above the entrance door is an elongated fanlight, above the café window the storefront is painted. On the first and second storeys are three cross windows. The middle bay is accentuated by window mouldings. The middle window on the first storey also has a French balcony. Above the cornice on ornamental corbels is a roof dormer.

The side facade consists on the ground floor of the café storefront. Above it, in the middle of the three bays making up the brick facade, are on the first and second storeys a cross window with window mouldings. Above the cornice on ornamental corbels is a roof dormer.

The rear facade, above the 1927 extension is plastered and consists of three window axes, of which the rightmost one projects slightly forward.

In the stairwell white marble has been used along the walls and for the first steps of the stairs, to the level of the former piano nobile above the basement. The staircase to the first floor is of wood. The staircase to the second storey is also of wood. Against the rear wall, behind the landing of the stairs, a small toilet space with a small sink has been created as a kind of recess.

The interior on the first storey dates from the 1880s. The front room, on the Amstel side/corner of Sarphatistraat is virtually unaltered, with original wainscoting, wall coverings, window and door frames and the doors including the associated hardware. The fireplace contains two columns of red marble with capitals and blue-and-white tiles on which the monogram of Dr. Mezger is displayed. Above the fireplace is a mirror in a frame of exuberant carved wood. The wooden coffered ceiling contains eight ceiling paintings depicting playing children, painted in 1888 by Ernst Witkamp and Nicolaas van der Waay. The symmetrically designed wall in which the double door to the back room is set contains on the right a false door, as a counterpart to the entrance door on the left.

The back room is considerably more simply designed. The room has a black marble fireplace with plasterwork overmantel and plaster ceiling. According to tradition, the rear wall hidden from view contains a passage to the 1927 extension.

The second storey is simply designed and contains the original layout: front and back room and a narrow kitchen located next to the front room. Both rooms are provided with the original fireplace, and the kitchen contains amongst other things the original wall tiles. In a partitioned-off section of the back room a bathroom has been created.

Valuation

The residential building is of general importance for its architectural-historical value as an example of a late 19th-century residential building with a particularly well-preserved Neo-Renaissance interior on the first storey which, in addition to wainscoting, wall coverings, panelled doors and a wooden coffered ceiling, also contains ceiling paintings by Nicolaas van der Waay and Ernst Witkamp.

The building has cultural-historical value as a residence in the second half of the 19th century of the famous physiotherapist Dr. J.G. Mezger.

The building furthermore possesses situational value due to its location on the corner of Amstel and Sarphatistraat, adjacent to the Amstelhotel situated on the other side of the bridge.
