Inleiding

MOLENRESTANT.

Waardering

Het molenrestant is van algemeen belang:

- vanwege bouwtechnisch-historische waarden als herkenbaar en representatief relict van een wipmolen;

- vanwege cultuurhistorische waarden als essentieel onderdeel van de ontginnings- en waterstaatkundige geschiedenis van Zuid-Holland en de Vijfheerenlanden in het bijzonder en de plaatselijke geschiedenis;

- vanwege ensemblewaarden in relatie tot de tussenboezem en de bovenmolen aan de Linge;

- vanwege situationele waarden betreffende de belendende waterlopen en het polderlandschap;

Introduction

MILL REMNANT. The scoop mill, formerly designated as 'Achtermolen' or 'Achterste Molen' is presumably built in the 17th century for the drainage of the polder Bruinsdel and Hoog-Leerbroek. It was provided with an internal miller's dwelling and a scoop wheel as a water-lifting device. The mill formed as a lower mill part of a two-stage drainage system, with the still existing mill on the Linge as the upper mill. This two-stage drainage system only needed to function during high Linge water levels. Apart from the mill remnant and the upper mill, the connecting intermediate weir and the outflow to the Linge are still present. The mill was dismantled around 1951, with the wind cross, the upper building and the running gear removed. The mill remnant was then given a function as an electric screw pump station but now only has a function as a dwelling. Any still present remnants of the screw pump station are of no value from the point of view of monument preservation. The two-stage drainage system described above is the last thing that still remains of comparable systems that have existed from time immemorial in the lower course of the river Linge.

Description

The mill remnant consists of a masonry brick base with on top the wooden pyramid-shaped lower tower of a scoop mill. The mill remnant, consisting of two storeys, is covered with potsherd work of wooden parts, characteristic of the region, and is provided with a flat roof. The mill remnant is provided on the north side with an extension in the form of a clog shed.

Valuation

The mill remnant is of general importance:

- for its structural-historical values as a recognizable and representative relic of a scoop mill;

- for its cultural-historical values as an essential component of the reclamation and water management history of South Holland and the Vijfheerenlanden in particular and the local history;

- for its ensemble values in relation to the intermediate weir and the upper mill on the Linge;

- for its situational values concerning the adjoining watercourses and the polder landscape;

- for its rarity as one of the few remaining relics of the formerly numerous mill groups with staged drainage in the Linge area.
