The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 1: HET HOOFDGEBOUW, KASTEEL ELSLOO, BESTAANDE UIT ECONOMIEGEBOUWEN (1817-1833) EN NEOGOTISCHE TOREN (1838).

Waardering

HET HOOFDGEBOUW, KASTEEL ELSLOO, BESTAANDE UIT ECONOMIEGEBOUWEN (1817-1833) EN NEOGOTISCHE TOREN (1838) is van algemeen belang wegens:

- de ouderdom;

- de (architectuur-)historische betekenis als relict van het in de eerste decennia van de 17de eeuw door de Maas overspoelde kasteel Elsloo;

- de kunsthistorische waarde van verschillende onderdelen, w.o. de torenkamer met neo-gotische betimmering;

- de hoge mate van gaafheid van het exterieur en de vrijwel geheel gaaf behouden gebleven inwendige plattegrond met indeling van de binnenruimten;

- de functioneel-historische relatie met de andere onderdelen van de historische buitenplaats;

Description component 1: THE MAIN BUILDING, CASTLE ELSLOO, CONSISTING OF FARM BUILDINGS (1817-1833) AND NEOGOTHIC TOWER (1838).

The interconnected complex of buildings and structures, known as castle Elsloo, exhibits in its entirety an L-shaped floor plan and consists of a manager's residence with a meeting hall (former pigsty) positioned at right angles to it with adjoining side room, a courtyard, the former tithe barn (first half 19th century) with a (former) cowshed built onto it to the east and adjoining storage, a water mill with weir pond, stair towers, large tower; the former farm buildings (built between 1817 and 1835 and in use as a restaurant) with the manager's residence close off the courtyard situated to the southwest with bed divisions and parking on two sides. Restoration in 1985-1986 and in use since then as a hotel-restaurant. The buildings are constructed in brick and, in a number of cases, provided with hard stone window and entrance surrounds and covered with gabled and half-hipped roofs. The above-ground cellars and stalls in the former farm buildings are vaulted with barrel or cloister vaults of brick or marl, the carriage house with a square hard stone central pillar and vaulted by cross vaults on segmental arches; hard stone transom with date 1601. Against the south façade of the manager's residence five built-up buttresses, all connected at the base by a low built-up wall and covered at the top with roof tiles, the whole functioning as a seed bed. In the round tower neogothic timber lining, wooden net vault, iron window tracery and painted coats of arms. The brick water mill, executed with decorative courses, against the southeastern side of the building complex has a large wooden water wheel and is fed from a weir pond, an artificial widening of the Slakbeek; façade stones from 1729 and Anno 1785; associated white barn.

Valuation

THE MAIN BUILDING, CASTLE ELSLOO, CONSISTING OF FARM BUILDINGS (1817-1833) AND NEOGOTHIC TOWER (1838) is of general importance because of:

- the age;

- the (architectural) historical significance as a relic of castle Elsloo, which was flooded by the Meuse in the first decades of the 17th century;

- the art historical value of various components, including the tower room with neo-gothic timber lining;

- the high degree of integrity of the exterior and the virtually entirely well-preserved internal floor plan with arrangement of the interior spaces;

- the functional-historical relationship with the other components of the historic country estate;

- the elemental siting within the composition of the historic country estate castle Elsloo.
