Description
The Sint Donatus Chapel, consisting of one storey, has a rectangular floor plan with a narrower 5/8th choir closure and an extended entrance section. The main volume and the entrance section have a gabled roof with a natural stone cross on the gable ends, and the choir has a hipped roof with an iron cross on top. The roofs are covered with slate in Maas bond. The chapel has a facing of reddish-brown and black-tinted brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a hardstone plinth. The nave is divided vertically by pilasters and corner pilasters that are connected halfway up and at the top by projecting block and dentil brickwork with cornices above that step upwards. The gable ends of the nave have shouldering pieces with hardstone coping stones, as does the extended entrance section. The choir has tapering buttresses topped with hardstone coping stones, which are likewise connected halfway up and at the top by projecting block and dentil brickwork. Pointed arch-shaped window and door openings, with hardstone lintels and trefoil fanlights. Steel windows with leaded glass panes. In the choir, there is a wooden door with wrought iron fittings on the left and right gables, in the front gable there is a double wooden door with fittings. The front gable and the extended entrance section have a spout gavel shape. To the left of the entrance is a small hardstone opening. Above the entrance section there are two linked recessed pointed arch windows with hardstone sill, with a trefoil fanlight above. Above this is a bell turret with shouldering pieces topped with natural stone coping stones and a pointed arch frieze. Both side gables are identical. The gables are divided by four pointed arch-shaped windows, with glazed artificial stone sills, separated by pilasters. At the rear gable is the choir. The rear gable is otherwise blind and contains no ornamentation.
The choir has four pointed arch-shaped windows with artificial stone sills in the side gables and a round window with a representation of St. Willibrordus in the rear gable.
The interior of the chapel consists of a nave and a choir. The side walls have a plastered plinth. Above this the wall is built up in red brick, supplemented with decorations in dark fired bricks. The chapel has an open-work wooden roof truss structure with collar ties in both nave and choir. Neo-Gothic altar (19th century) and Neo-Gothic wooden pews (19th century).
Valuation
The Sint Donatus Chapel is of general importance. The building represents a cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of the development of Catholicism in Limburg, as well as from a typological perspective. Since 1800 a Sint Donatus Chapel has been known on this site. The dedication to St. Donatus also contributes to the cultural-historical rarity.
The architectural-historical values are determined among other things by the Neo-Gothic building style, the ornamentation and the use of materials. This architectural integrity of the object contributes to its rarity. The chapel has ensemble value because of its distinctive location at a road junction in Hushoven, and its connection with the community.
