Inleiding
Eysbouts, geplaatst in 1948.

Description
Description of complex component 1
Introduction
ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH BUILDING dedicated to St. Adrianus with associated WALL and SACRED HEART IMAGE. The parish church in a style derived from neo-Gothic, the "Rotterdam Gothic", with broad pointed arches was designed together with the adjoining presbytery and enclosure of the church square in 1928 by Jos. Margry (Josephus Cornelius Franciscus; 1888-1982); built 1930-1931 by contractor Van Sambeek from Haarlem. In his design the architect applied a new liturgical principle for church building, whereby unobstructed sight of the high altar played a role.
The church was altered in 1971, when among other things the authentic teak wood church benches were converted into light fixtures. Subsequently altered and restored around 1985 and 2001, when many of the earlier, disruptive alterations were undone. Church floor and bench plan date from the 2001 restoration. Of the altar designed by Margry, only the Calvary group by Van de Winkel (The Hague) has been preserved since the 1970s; in the altar space there is now an organ, purchased in 1969. The step in front of the entrance was altered in the early 21st century into a dais with a ramp.
Description
Basilical CHURCH BUILDING in fine brickwork of greyish-yellow clinkers consisting of a nave with side aisles (gangways) and priests' choir with pentagonal apse with ambulatory, flanked on the left by the vestry room and on the right by the sacristy. At the front a substantial, square tower and porch. Tile-covered gabled roofs. The front facade is dominated by three steeply pitched stepped gables placed behind one another with step motif, behind which respectively porch, organ gallery and nave. In the front facade a central main entrance with hinged doors under a pointed arch with window and with large closing and corner stones and secondary entrances on either side provide access to the porch. Above this in the stepped gable of the organ gallery a tall and broad pointed arch window. On the left the tower with vertical articulation in the first zone; above this sound openings, profiled horizontal moulding and all round clock faces alongside horizontal accents on the corners; the very tall tower spire, covered with slate and provided with wrought iron cross, makes up approximately one third of the height of the tower. At the bottom of the tower a pointed arch portal with hinged doors. All doors with heavy lintels and large thumb latches with wrought decorative curls. In front of the tower a stone step on either side flanked by a mortared wall with natural stone coping. To the left of the front facade of the entrance porch a slightly longer mortared wall, from which the extent of the former step can be determined. On the wall a cast iron lantern. On the right the presbytery (monument number 529795) adjoins the front facade of the church. Left and right side facades of the church in three bays. Each bay with a large and broad pointed arch window under one of three linked flying buttresses; the spaces thus created form in the interior the narrow side aisles. Towards the choir narrow and tall coupled pointed arch windows of the vestry room and sacristy. In the roof pitches of the nave small flying buttresses. The rear facade of the nave is a stepped gable, against which the choir with three coupled pointed arch windows in both the clerestory and the ambulatory.
The entire interior in fine and decorative brickwork of yellow Friesian stone with glazed Friesian stone on corners and edges, in the lower zone marble wainscoting, interspersed with striking black natural stone bands. At the entrances a porch space, behind this the space under the organ gallery with three vaults and adjoining on the right, on the north side, the baptistry and passage to baptistry chamber with safe by Lips of Dordrecht, whose door comes from the predecessor church of 1868. Above the organ gallery the Caecilian window from the building period. Broad central nave and very narrow side aisles (gangways) separated by short octagonal pillars: four free-standing and four wall pillars. Tall and broad ribbed vault in fine brickwork with decoratively mortared vault surfaces (each vault surface is a small herringbone vault) and green and yellow glazed Friesian stone in the arches and ribs, keystones of tufa stone. Springing of the vaults at low height because of the short pillars. Spandrels under broad pointed arch windows in the side facades of the side aisles are provided with wall paintings (commission in 1931) with fourteen stations of the cross by Gerrit (Gerard) van Geffen (born 1883), below adjoining marble wainscoting. Narrow vaults in the three bays of the side aisle. Wrought iron gate to the Mary Chapel at the bottom of the tower. Behind the triumphal arch the vaulted apse with stained glass windows in the clerestory; ambulatory with stained glass windows. All other windows are likewise provided with stained glass, the oldest executed by the firm Basart and Sloet from The Hague (including the apse). The large figurative windows of this firm in the side walls of the church space were replaced by other windows, of which two are now designed by the Benedictine Jac. van der Mey, a Nativity window (1947) and a Resurrection window (1943). Others by Stokhof-De Jong from 1950. In the sacristy are authentic oak credence and vestment cabinets, a sacristy safe by Martens, Doetinchem, from the building period and stained glass in art-deco style. Bells in the tower by the firm Eysbouts, installed in 1948. The tall WALL consisting of Flemish bond brickwork and natural stone coping closes off the church square on the left side. At the height of the middle of the church square the wall is worked out in art deco forms into a tall pointed arch niche on natural stone pillars with a stepped gable top. In analogy to the entrance of the tower and the presbytery the niche is flanked by low mortared walls with natural stone coping, in the middle a ditto plinth with thereon a SACRED HEART IMAGE. A transversely placed wall section with tall gate wings adjoins the corner at the bottom left of the church; at the bottom left behind the wall adjoins again (since an alteration with reuse of the ironwork) against the church.
Evaluation
The CHURCH BUILDING of Sint Adrianus with WALL and SACRED HEART IMAGE is of general importance because of its architectural and cultural-historical value: - as part of the oeuvre of architect Jos. Margry and as the last in a series of churches by church builders Margry; - because of the great span of and the exceptional execution of the ribbed vault in fine brickwork; - because of the very carefully designed architecture and the architectural coherence between church and wall with image; - as an example of the typological development of the Catholic church building in the interwar period; - as part of the oeuvres of glass artist Jac. van der Mey and painter Van Geffen; - because of its church-historical importance as a continuation of the old parish of St. Adrianus; - as a landmark building and ensemble for the centre of Naaldwijk; - because of the ensemble values between church with wall and image and the presbytery; - because of the situational value through its location on the square.
