Introduction

A WAREHOUSE and adjoining DWELLING HOUSE situated in the building line of Westhavenkade with a clinker-paved COURTYARD to the rear, forming part of the Kwakkelstein complex. The partly eighteenth-century buildings were provided with eclectically styled facades in the nineteenth century.

N.B: Formerly a double building with two, more or less, identical spout gables. The right building was truncated before 1942 and provided with a cornice-topped facade. The storeys of the warehouse originally had wooden shutters.

Description

The object consists of two separate buildings, on the left a warehouse and on the right a dwelling house, each with a basement, two storeys and a garret storey beneath respectively a gabled roof and a bent hipped roof with decorative ridge tile. Both roofs are covered with red hollow tiles. The left warehouse has a spout gable, the right dwelling house a cornice-topped facade. The buildings are constructed above rectangular floor plans (largely) in yellow IJssel brick. The ground floor of both front facades is provided with rusticated blockwork under a moulded plinth course. Above these the facades are treated with plasterwork featuring imitation joints. The frames of windows and doors are of wood. The warehouse has on the far left a double wooden door, which provides access to a covered passage towards the small courtyard to the rear of the building, entirely paved with clinkers. The passageway has a wooden ceiling and is paved with red tiles. Beside the double door are two rectangular windows with fanlights. The storeys have in the centre, beneath a wooden hoist beam, a hoist bay with wooden loading doors featuring cassettes and beaded sections with fanlights. On the first storey the loading door is flanked with six-light sash windows. The adjoining dwelling house section (number 62) has on the left an elegantly moulded wooden door with two-light window and fanlight and high natural stone threshold. On the right are two tall windows with fanlights. The storeys have two windows with fanlights, those on the first storey being provided with leaded lights. The facade is concluded by a moulded cornice in the form of a pediment. The left section of the building has on the rear side a two-storey extension with a garret storey beneath a gabled roof covered with red tiles. The southern gable facing the courtyard has at ground level on the left a rectangular and on the right an arched loading door, both of wood, providing access to the lower storage cellar. Between these a small square window. On the storey is an internal back door with fanlight accessible via a simple iron stair. To the left of this a rectangular sash window and on the far left a smaller window. In the interior, particularly noteworthy are the wooden ceilings with (oak) wooden binder beams of the storeys, the wooden roof truss structures and in the dwelling house, as far as still present, the original moulded doors, fireplaces, stucco ceilings and wainscotting.

Valuation

Eighteenth- and partly nineteenth-century former double warehouse now consisting of a warehouse and a dwelling house with courtyard, both with an eclectically styled facade of general importance for architectural and cultural-historical value as a reminder of the Vlaardingen herring trade, because of the particular coherence between exterior and interior as well as of importance because of ensemble value with the remaining complex components belonging to the herring trade complex Kwakkelstein, determining the character of the view onto Westhavenkade at Vlaardingen and of situational value connected with the development of the city.
