Inleiding
Monumentale gietijzeren LANTAARN met vier armlantaarns en een middenlantaarn en aan weerszijden twee FONTEINEN genaamd 'Kroningslantaarn', prominent gesitueerd midden op het Stationsplein met een omliggend ovaal PLANTSOEN. De lantaarn annex fontein werd in 1901 onthuld en herdenkt de troonsbestijging van Koningin Wilhelmina op 31 augustus 1898. Het geheel werd in Jugendstiltrant ontworpen door K. Cramer en vervaardigd door de firma F.W. Braat te Delft, in opdracht van het Vlaardingse Oranjecomité.
NB De Kroningslantaarn werd in 1989 gerestaureerd.
Omschrijving
De lantaarn is op een hardstenen voetstuk, centraal gesitueerd op een ovaal plantsoen en is bereikbaar via twee, eveneens ovale treden bestaande uit gele IJsselsteen binnen een hardstenen band. Het voetstuk, opgebouwd uit verschillende geprofileerde segmenten, heeft een rechthoekige sokkel met op iedere zijde een natuurstenen plaat. Aan de noord- en zuidzijde heeft de sokkel een komvormig waterbassin, waarboven zich koperen waterspuwers bevinden in de vorm van leeuwenkoppen. Op de natuurstenen plaat aan de westzijde bevindt zich een koperen plaquette met een anagram bestaande uit een gekroonde 'W' en links '18' en rechts '98' en eronder de datum '31 augustus'. Op de natuurstenen plaat aan de oostzijde is een plaquette aangebracht met in sierlijke kapitalen de tekst 'TER HERINNERING AAN DE TROONBESTIJGING VAN KONINGIN WILHELMINA'. Op deze sokkel bevindt zich de zwart geschilderde smeedijzeren lantaarn waarvan enkele decoratieve details zijn verguld. De lantaarn bestaat uit een middenkolom, gedecoreerd met knoppen en sierlijk krulwerk. Ter hoogte van de hoeken van de sokkel dragen sierlijk gesmede zijsteunen de kruiselings geplaatste armen van vier lantaarns. De vijfde lantaarn bevindt zich in het verlengde van de middenkolom. De oorspronkelijk door gasgloeilichtbranders verlichtte lantaarns zijn voorzien van een zeszijdig bronzen kap met vergulde kroontjes.

Monumental cast-iron LANTERN with four arm lanterns and a centre lantern and on either side two FOUNTAINS named 'Coronation Lantern', prominently situated in the middle of Stationsplein with a surrounding oval GARDEN. The lantern together with fountain was unveiled in 1901 and commemorates the accession to the throne of Queen Wilhelmina on 31 August 1898. The whole was designed in Art Nouveau style by K. Cramer and manufactured by the firm F.W. Braat in Delft, on commission of the Vlaardingen Orange Committee.
NB The Coronation Lantern was restored in 1989.
Description
The lantern is set on a hard stone pedestal, centrally situated on an oval garden and is accessed via two, likewise oval steps consisting of yellow IJssel stone within a hard stone band. The pedestal, built up from various moulded segments, has a rectangular base with on each side a natural stone slab. On the north and south sides the base has a bowl-shaped water basin, above which are copper water spouts in the form of lion heads. On the natural stone slab on the west side there is a copper plaque with a monogram consisting of a crowned 'W' and on the left '18' and on the right '98' and below the date '31 August'. On the natural stone slab on the east side a plaque has been affixed with in ornamental capitals the text 'TER HERINNERING AAN DE TROONBESTIJGING VAN KONINGIN WILHELMINA'. On this base stands the black-painted wrought-iron lantern, some decorative details of which are gilded. The lantern consists of a central column, decorated with knobs and ornamental scrollwork. At the height of the corners of the base, ornamentally wrought supports carry the crosswise placed arms of four lanterns. The fifth lantern is located in the extension of the central column. The lanterns, originally lit by gas incandescent light burners, are equipped with a hexagonal bronze cap with gilded coronets.
