The register's description

In1eiding

Waardering

Introduction

In 1929 Mr and Mrs Van Bentum commissioned architect W.A. Maas to build a DWELLING HOUSE, villa type on a specially purchased plot of land to the north of the village of Jutphaas. The country house on the Utrechtsestraatweg in Nieuwegein (Jutphaas) is, as far as is known, the only functionalist design by Maas. According to Johanna van Bentum-van de Anker (the client) the design was created in collaboration with Gerrit Rietveld. However, no direct evidence for this can be found. The leaded glass windows are presumably made after a design by Piet Mondriaan, who was friends with both Maas and Rietveld. The designs for the windows have, however, not been recovered. In the early seventies the house fell into disrepair because the concrete slab on which the house is founded subsided and warped after the groundwater level had dropped significantly. In 1986-1987 the house was restored and extended. The extension falls outside the protection.

Description

The whitewashed villa with attached garage in functionalist style is founded on a concrete slab. The house with a composite floor plan is situated on a platform, which is surrounded by a parapet. The platform with an adjoining access bridge follows the facade line of the house. The facades are constructed of brickwork and provided with a plaster layer. The villa is composed of building blocks offset in height under flat roofs. The main volume consists of two storeys with a roof terrace surrounded by a metal balustrade. To the right rear is a three-storey high tower-shaped extension (stairwell), by which the roof terrace is accessible. On the left side is a risalit with a semicircularly projecting conservatory above which is a balcony. Front right is a straight corner bay placed on the ground floor. The entrance is located in the right side facade under a canopy. On the far right a garage is attached with an adjoining modern extension. The windows have steel frames. The two-sided projecting window arrangement next to the entrance, the fanlight above the entrance door and the windows in the stairwell are provided with leaded glass with characteristics of 'De Stijl'. The interior layout is largely original.

Valuation

The villa is of general importance because of the architectural-historical value because of the building type and architectural style, as well as because of the characteristic use of whitewashed facades and steel frames. Furthermore because of the integrity of the main form and detailing. Finally as a remarkable example from the oeuvre of architect W.A. Maas. Of image-forming value because of the elevated location on the Utrechtsestraatweg and the Merwedekanaal.
