Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The former MONASTERY with associated INFANT SCHOOL and GIRLS' SCHOOL was built in 1894 after a design by architect Alfred Tepe, who also designed the nearby St. Nicolaaskerk. The initiators were pastor Van Heukelum and Mrs Baesjou-Heytink. The latter made a large sum of money available to found a monastery with school in memory of her deceased son Francois. Contractor N. Willemse from Vreeswijk was awarded the work. The blessing took place on 28 May 1895. The Franciscan sisters of the Heythuysen Congregation moved into the monastery and took on the teaching duties. The monastery's furniture came from the monastery in Kralingen, which was closed in 1895, where Franciscan sisters were also working. They started with an infant school and a sewing school for girls. In that same year, a girls' day school was also begun. On 6 May 1920, the 25th anniversary celebration of the monastery and school took place. As a token of appreciation, the sisters received a new altar for the chapel, designed by H. Mengelberg. The stained-glass window above it was by Otto Mengelberg. Shortly after, in 1921, two side windows in the chapel were also provided with stained glass. In 1921, the girls' school on the north side (right) was raised by one storey. A further extension of the school followed in 1954. The Franciscan sisters left the monastery in 1954. The nursery school was closed in 1966. The monastery and school were given the function of an association building in 1967.
Description
The former monastery building with infant school and girls' school in Neo-Gothic style is set somewhat back from the road. A number of monumental beech trees stand in front of the building. On the right side of the complex is the Roman Catholic St. Nicolaaskerk. The complex has a U-shaped floor plan and consists of a recessed, two-storey central block under a composite roof with the ridge parallel to the road (former monastery). To the right of this is a likewise two-storey block under a gabled roof with the ridge perpendicular to the road (former girls' school) and to the left a single-storey block under a gabled roof with the ridge perpendicular to the road (former infant school). The roofs are covered with blue Dutch tiles. The facades are built of brickwork in cross bond, provided with various dentil courses and ornamental wall anchors. Above the windows, round-arched or pointed arch-shaped arch fields or bands are applied. The recessed central section is symmetrically arranged and five bays wide. In the centre is a risalite with a spout gable. Within this the main entrance is placed with side lights. On the arch field above the entrance, the new name of the complex 'de Lantaern' is stated. Right above the entrance is a large pointed arch-shaped stained-glass window with brick tracery (from the chapel) and a plastered wall panel with a brick frame bearing the original name of the complex 'Francois Heytink Baesjou Stichting'. To the right and left of the risalite, on the ground floor is a door with a fanlight and a large (six-pane) window, and on the first floor two small windows. The two-storey block on the right has in the front facade on the ground floor and on the first floor (from 1921) five tall narrow windows under pointed arch-shaped arch fields and on the attic storey one window. The right side facade has a projecting gable section with an entrance and tall narrow windows as on the front. On either side of this, extensions under a flat roof are added (fall outside the protection). The single-storey block on the left has in the front facade on the ground floor five tall narrow windows under pointed arch-shaped arch fields and one small window on the attic storey. The left side facade contains an entrance with double doors and a fanlight and twice two blind recesses and twice two tall narrow windows as on the front. The window section in the rear facade is renewed. The rear facade falls outside the protection. Within the complex, on the front of the first floor of the recessed central block, is the chapel with a timber ribbed barrel vault with transverse arches on consoles and a gallery. The gallery has a timber panel balustrade. The double access door to the chapel is provided with letter slots. In the side wall a marble memorial stone is set with the text
'In the year O.H. 1894 on the 22nd of May, Her Ladyship Elisabeth Heytink, widow of Mr Adrianus Johannus Baesjou van Vroonestein, laid the first stone of this Institution and dedicated the same in memory of her only child, who died on the 31st January 1866 at Jutfaas, named: FRANCOIS HEYTINK BAESJOU STICHTING'. The chapel also contains a large three-part stained-glass window, which was made in 1920 by Otto Mengelberg and on which are depicted the stigmata of St. Francis and St. Clara and St. Grescentia, and in the side facades a narrow stained-glass window with the depiction of an angel from 1921. The corridors have beams with keystones. The stairs are provided with worked stair balusters and cast-iron spindles in the stair rail.
Valuation
Monastery with infant school and girls' school is of general importance due to its architectural-historical value as an example of a conglomeration of buildings in Neo-Gothic style from 1894 united in one design, designed by architect Alfred Tepe, as well as due to the presence of a chapel on the first floor of the front with valuable interior elements such as a timber ribbed barrel vault with transverse arches on consoles, a gallery with panel balustrade and three stained-glass windows from 1920 and 1921 by Otto Mengelberg. The complex is also a good example from the oeuvre of architect Alfred Tepe. Furthermore, the complex has important ensemble value in conjunction with the nearby St. Nicolaaskerk, also designed by Alfred Tepe. Finally, the complex is valuable due to its striking location on the Utrechtsestraatweg.
