Inleiding
WOONBLOK (C) op Z-vormige plattegrond met etagewoningen, door de architecten H.P. Berlage en J.C. van Epen in 1913/1914 ontworpen en in 1917/1918 gebouwd, in de stijl van het Rationalisme, onderdeel van het woningbouwcomplex van de Algemene Woningbouw Vereniging rond de Schaepmanstraat. Het complexonderdeel is met het lange middendeel van de Z-vorm tegenover blok B van hetzelfde complex gelegen.
Omschrijving
Op een Z-vormige plattegrond, in baksteen in Vlaams verband, over vier bouwlagen opgetrokken bouwblok onder met oranje holle pannen gedekte, geknikte zadeldaken. De dakkapellen, voor zover aanwezig, volgen het ritme van de gevelgeleding.
Het lange, 18 traveeën brede, bouwblokdeel van de Z-vorm heeft op de hoeken een driezijdig uitgebouwd erker over drie verdiepingen. De linker erker heeft links twee vensterassen, waarvan die met het trappenhuis tweeledige vensters bevat. De andere trappenhuizen hebben in de as enkelvoudige vensters. Rechts van de deze erker een trappenhuis en een vensteras met drieledige vensters. De rechter erker heeft links een trappenhuis onder drieledige vensters. Centraal een dubbel trappenhuis in een driezijdig teruggerooid deel. Tussen dit centrale deel en de delen van de hoekerkers bevinden zich aan beide kanten twee driezijdig teruggerooide trappenhuizen volgens schema, onder enkelvoudige vensters, de bovenste (dichtgezet) tegen de daklijst. De korte gevel aan de De Kempenaerstraat heeft links een topgevel met in de top een drieledig venster, het midelste halfrond gesloten. Hieronder een vensteras en een driezijdige erker over drie verdiepingen. Rechts van de erker één vensteras en een vijfzijdige hoekerker over drie verdiepingen. De andere korte zijde heeft eveneens één driezijdige erker met rechts op de hoek een hoge schoorsteen en links in de oksel een trappenhuis volgens schema onder enkelvoudige vensters.
De achtergevel wordt gekenmerkt door inpandige balkons, twee of drie traveeën breed, tussen twee traveeën brede delen binnen de roolijn gelegen. De afzonderlijke balkons, met standvinken en houten balustrade, worden onderling afgescheiden door de balkonkasten. In het dakvlak komen enkelvoudige en gekoppelde dakkapellen voor.
Waardering
Woonblok (C), onderdeel van het woningbouwcomplex Algemene Woningbouwvereniging rond de Schaepmanstraat, van algemeen belang vanwege cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde, alsmede stedenbouwkundige waarde, als voorbeeld van grootschalige arbeiderswoningbouw uit de beginjaren van de twintigste eeuw, tevens vanwege typologische waarde en ensemblewaarde. RESIDENTIAL BLOCK (C) on Z-shaped plan with apartment buildings, designed by architects H.P. Description
On a Z-shaped plan, in brick in Flemish bond, erected over four storeys, a building block covered with orange hollow pan tiles, bent gabled roofs. The roof dormers, insofar as present, follow the rhythm of the facade articulation.
The long, 18 bays wide, building block section of the Z-shape has a three-sided projecting bay window on the corners over three storeys. The left bay window has two window axes to its left, of which the one with the staircase contains two-part windows. The other staircases have single windows in the axis. To the right of this bay window a staircase and a window axis with three-part windows. The right bay window has a staircase to its left beneath three-part windows. Centrally a double staircase in a three-sided recessed section. Between this central section and the parts of the corner bay windows are, on both sides, two three-sided recessed staircases according to pattern, beneath single windows, the upper (infilled) against the roofline. The short facade on the De Kempenaerstraat has a stepped gable on the left with a three-part window at the top, the middle one semicircularly closed. Beneath this a window axis and a three-sided bay window over three storeys. To the right of the bay window one window axis and a five-sided corner bay window over three storeys. The other short side also has a three-sided bay window with on the right at the corner a tall chimney and to the left in the angle a staircase according to pattern beneath single windows.
The rear facade is characterized by built-in balconies, two or three bays wide, between sections two bays wide within the roof line. The individual balconies, with angle brackets and wooden balustrade, are separated from each other by the balcony boxes. In the roof plane there are single and coupled roof dormers.
Valuation
Residential Block (C), part of the housing complex Algemene Woningbouwvereniging around the Schaepmanstraat, of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value, as well as urban design value, as an example of large-scale workers' housing from the early years of the twentieth century, also because of typological value and ensemble value.
