Inleiding

Introduction

Synagogue with associated caretaker's dwelling, built 1936-1937 on the corner of Lekstraat and Kinderdijkstraat, based on the winning competition design in the style of the Nieuwe Bouwen movement by A. Elzas, commissioned by the Nederlandsche Israëlietische Hoofdsynagoge. The iron framework is by N.V. Gebr. Vincent. Both on the Lekstraat and on the Kinderdijkstraat side there is a garden with a boundary fence in the form of iron railings.

The copper chandeliers of the former main synagogue were also made to a design by Elzas.

N.B. In 1984-1985 the building was altered, whereby the small synagogue was enlarged to a synagogue for a maximum of 160 people and the large synagogue was converted into a Resistance Museum; at present (1999) the former main synagogue houses an auction house. The galleries and the niche for the Ark were retained in this process. Both on the Lekstraat and on the Kinderdijkstraat side there is a garden with iron railings as boundary fence. The low extension behind the small synagogue is not included in the protection.

Description

Building constructed on an irregular U-shaped floor plan consisting of two rectangular building volumes connected by an intermediate section. The whole is partly cellar and consists of two to three storeys under flat roofs. The roof overhangs are clad with copper. The large rectangular main building has a concrete and iron structure and is externally clad with natural stone slabs. The entrance beneath a canopy with oak double doors is located in the short NW-gable on the Lekstraat side, where on the ground floor there are five square steel windows set at regular intervals and recessed with projecting frames. On the otherwise blank gable a Hebrew text in metal letters (I Kings 6:13). Beneath the roof overhang a circular opening intended for flying a flag. The SW-gable on the Kinderdijkstraat is seven window bays wide with a lower extension on the far right with a narrow window band above an emergency exit. On the ground floor seven square windows with flat projecting frames. The upper storey has seven tall, coupled steel windows with vertical glazing bars. The north-eastern long side gable also with a vertical window band beneath the roof overhang. Rear side with two lower extensions. The left extension is that of the Holy Ark; the right extension originally housed the 'room for the sacred vestments'. The ancillary building with the small synagogue and the caretaker's dwelling and the intermediate section are built in yellow brickwork. In the intermediate section is the men's entrance; to the left of it the women's entrance, both beneath a canopy. Above the entrances two window bands with vertical glazing bars. Recessed caretaker's dwelling with oval-shaped glazed extension with access to the roof terrace. Two windows on either side of the glazed extension. Cylindrical staircase with access to roof terrace from the main building. Side gable of the ancillary building with broad windows on the storeys in the low right bay. On the ground floor the entrance to the caretaker's dwelling beneath a canopy. At the level of the caretaker's dwelling two windows with vertical glazing bars. Overlying L-shaped roof terrace with iron parapet. On the rear side of the terrace a round, tall brick flue with lantern as light supply for the women's cloakroom. The balcony overhang of the terrace is clad with copper.

Rear side with on the first storey a continuous broad band of blindfolded windows. On the second storey at the level of the caretaker's dwelling over the entire width of the gable a balcony with iron parapet. Balcony doors with windows on either side.

The interior of the former main synagogue still has the women's gallery running around on three sides with an open wooden railing as parapet. The tall wall opposite the entrance is clad with marble slabs, upon which in metal letters is a Hebrew text (Psalm 2:11); the niche for the Ark is still present. The copper chandeliers in the central hall are original.

The small synagogue has a small women's gallery on the short side, with likewise open wooden railing as parapet. The benches of the men's section are arranged on three sides of the bima. Benches and bima come from the former main synagogue.

Valuation

Synagogue (partly former, partly in use as such) with associated components from 1936-1937 of general importance for its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value, as a rare example of a Jewish place of worship executed in the Nieuwe Zakelijkheid style, and as a building preserved outwardly and partly inwardly intact with particularly restrained use of materials and light. Also of importance as a principal work by architect A. Elzas.
