Inleiding

Description
Introduction
On the Dorpsstraat, located by the dike, a PARISH HOUSE with CARETAKER'S DWELLING and FRÖBEL SCHOOL built in 1932 to the design of architects Willemse and Van Overhagen on commission of the R.K. church board of Vreeswijk. The contractor was the Bredase Beton Maatschappij. The building is erected in a businesslike-expressionist style. The cubist formal language, the use of materials and colours show strong affinity with the style of architect W.M. Dudok. The building has retained roughly the original layout with the caretaker's dwelling on the upper left, the theatre hall in the centre and the former Fröbel school on the right. Of the original interior detailing virtually nothing has been preserved, with the exception of two sets of doors with a small stained glass window and the doors with sidelights of the two classrooms.
Description
Parish house with caretaker's dwelling and Fröbel school located on the Dorpsstraat. The building is erected on an L-shaped plan and is composed of three building sections of decreasing height and offset in relation to each other, all with flat roofs. The facades above a travertine band of red brick are erected in yellow brick in common bond with diagonally finished recessed joints (Dudok joint). The facades contain steel windows with glazing bars. The doors are of wood provided with ladder windows, sometimes combined with a narrow, lower running strip window. Doors and gutter lines are painted blue, the windows white.
At the front three building sections of different heights can be distinguished. The left building section is the highest and has two storeys. In both storeys a composite steel window is installed on the right. On the left on the ground floor is an entrance consisting of a double door. The second storey has an internal balcony accessible through two doors. The windows are flanked by layers of alternating dark and light brick. The transition between the left building section and the middle slightly lower building section is formed by a vertical accent in the form of a rectangular chimney. The middle building section projects slightly forward. It contains on the left on the ground floor a recessed entrance section consisting of a double door with a fanlight. The right part of the entrance section is accentuated by a protruding, sharply projecting wall element of blue glazed brick. Above it protrudes a black knob. On the right a window section consisting of a large composite steel frame with lower and fanlights. This window lies in the wall plane with the exception of the left side, which recedes parallel to the blue point. The layer above is blank. The right and lowest building section projects slightly back in relation to the middle building section. Against it is placed a protruding entrance portico under overhanging flat roof containing a double door, perpendicular to the front facade. In front of it lies a step of two treads. On the street side the facade contains a narrow strip of windows that recedes on the left and is flanked by a small corner pilaster in red brick. To the right of the extension, between the portico and the adjacent building, a wall of red brick is laid. At the corner point under a moulding is located a spherical decorative element that rests on a section of the wall accentuated by grey stones. The rear facades are erected in red brick in common bond. The rear facade of the theatre hall has a door with fanlight and seven double-pane windows with steel frames. In the right side facade is a door with four coupled windows under a concrete moulding above which a series of roedeverdeling fanlights is placed. The rear facade of the former Fröbel school contains above a concrete moulding above the doors and (blocked) windows a strip of fanlights with steel frames.
Valuation
The building is of general interest for its value as an architectural history example of a building in businesslike-expressionist style with associated material use and detailing. The building is of cultural-historical value because of its former functions.
