Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Far from the inhabited world, on a moated wooded plot, a burial vault of the Van Hogendorp family from the year 1824. The place is accessible via a straight forest road which begins in the former farmyard complex Dennenoord, which forms part of the hamlet Nieuwkerk situated on the Dutch-Belgian border, which arose around an exterritorial R.C. church.
Description
The burial vault constructed of reddish-brown hand-formed brick (18/19 x 9 x 4.5/5.5 cm) laid in Flemish bond, not sunken, on a rectangular plan (internally circa 2.8 x 6 m) has an arched entrance in the middle of one of the long sides. The walls are internally circa 1.8 m high, after which they transition into a fairly flat-laid barrel vault. On the inside of the entrance a rabbet, traces of removal of a possibly wooden upper frame and on either side the remains of iron staples. The floor consists of sand; the burial vault is empty. Under the numerous recent graffiti to the left above the entrance in black paint: "J + H. HUPKA / NOV '42". On the exterior arches have been laid against the walls, after which they are completely earthed over. Apart from the arched entrance, only an earthen mound in the forest is thus visible which is completely overgrown with trees and shrubs. Around the burial mound a fairly wide moat has been laid out so as to create the impression of an island of the dead following the example of the grave of Jean-Jacques Rousseau in the park of Ermenonville (1778). Island and mound are overgrown with oaks, beeches and rhododendrons. The corners of the island are marked with sturdy red beeches (stem circumference circa 2.20 m).
Valuation
The burial vault from 1824 of the Van Hogendorp family is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as an example of a burial vault of an eminent family which, in the person of Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp (1762-1834), played a role in the establishment of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1815. Moreover, the burial vault is of significance for genealogy and the typological development of the grave of an eminent family as well as of the private burial ground. The burial vault situated in the immediate vicinity of the border is moreover an expression of the socio-economic situation of Catholics in the Northern Netherlands. The object has architectural-historical value as a rare example of a burial vault with barrel vault incorporated in the context of elements of a romantic landscape garden. The object, through its embedding in the artificial landscape with tree plantings, also has ensemble value. Finally, the object is of significance on account of its typological rarity.
