Inleiding

Voormalige LANGSTRAATBOERDERIJ, gebouwd in XVIIIB in Ambachtelijk-traditionele bouwtrant.

Introduction

Former LANGSTRAAT FARMHOUSE, built in the second half of the 18th century in crafted traditional building style. The business section was subsequently partly renewed and fitted out as office and residential space, the large stable with aisle as a workshop. The building is situated on a plot with a fruit orchard behind the house. It is located in the centre of the village, next to the R.K. church with rectory, amongst various comparable farmhouses.

Description

The single-storey farmhouse consists of a dwelling house on a rectangular plan with an equally wide barn in line with it under a gabled roof which is half-hipped at the rear. Behind on the left is an outbuilding originally used as a horse stable under a gabled roof with half-hipped end which stands transverse to the barn and is joined to it. In the angle between barn and horse stable is a lower outbuilding under a flat roof. The roof covering of the dwelling section consists of thatch; after a fire wall the business section is covered with smothered clay tiles. In the middle of the ridge of the dwelling section a brick chimney.

The asymmetrically arranged front facade is, like the entire dwelling section, built above a rendered plinth of yellow hand-formed IJssel brick in Flemish bond. The shouldered spout gable with top pilaster on corbel is provided with interlacing. The spout with two steps and the shoulders are covered with red tiles, in front of it on a corbel the top pilaster, beneath which a natural stone heart. The facade has windows on three levels. The ground floor has a renewed solid front door slightly off-centre on the left with two-pane fanlight with leaded glass infill from circa 1930. Hard stone doorstep. On the left the window of the upstairs room with 12-pane sash window. On the right two windows with 20-pane sash windows. On the attic storey, evenly spaced, are two 25-pane sash windows. Above that, at loft level, centrally is a 16-pane sash window installed. The door and all windows have stretches indicated in plaster and painted red/white, which is also to be seen elsewhere in the village. The ground floor windows are provided with thumbpieces and wooden window sills. Rod anchors. The frames are cream-coloured, the sashes white, the window sills and sub-sills grey and the front door painted standard green. The right side facade of the dwelling section has the characteristic high narrow window for Langstraat farmhouses, here with 10-pane sash window with window sill. Further after various building traces at the far right two windows with 6-pane sash windows (19th century) of the living kitchen. Rod anchors. The left side facade of the dwelling house has at the far right in the corner again the characteristic high narrow window, now with modern infill. Further at the far right a small square window pane and a large modern kitchen window. Rod anchors. The walls of the business section, including an outbuilding under flat roof and the former horse stable were completely rebuilt around 1998 from reclaimed IJssel brick. New windows and doors. The fore stable is newly rendered with pot-clay and tar.

The lower part of the rear facade dates from the second half of the 19th century and is built of dark brick. It has alternating 3 arched doors and 4 arched windows with cross mullions. At the far right the double half-doors, of which the left lower part is separately movable. The top is rendered with pot-clay and tar.

Internally the old layout is largely preserved. A long narrow passage runs from the central front door to the business section. On either side rooms, old beam ceilings. The old stove in the living kitchen, centrally in the house in a chimney breast with moulded chimney brace, walls of tiles with two remarkable manganese-coloured tile tableaux with animal representations. Built into the chimney breast a black stone chimney mantel (second half of the 19th century). Arched cellar with upstairs room. A built-in wooden staircase leads from the passage to the upper floor. Above the dwelling house two pine collar ties with straight legs, struts and projecting tie-beam. On it the purlins with wind braces. On the tie-beam two principal rafters with collar tie on which again a purlin, braced to the rafters. Ridge purlin, braced to the collar tie to obtain lengthwise bond. Fire wall to barn of IJssel brick. Chimney. Against the wall of the front facade two rooms are partitioned off.

The business section, in contrast to the dwelling house, is built around a cruck frame construction. Three colossal oak cruck frames with hacked carpenters' marks span the large space. The layout and construction method of the crucks follows that of the Flemish barn, but is firmly connected to the dwelling house, whereby the typical Langstraat farmhouse is created. This thus means that the cruck is asymmetrical, on the right executed as an anchor-beam construction, on the left laid and projecting, supported by a strut and thus providing space for the aisle. Between the crucks use was made of common rafters with centre post, hammer-beam and collar tie.

Valuation

The Langstraat farmhouse from the second half of the 18th century is of general interest. The building has cultural-historical value as an example of a region-specific farmhouse type. It has architectural-historical value due to the well-preserved main structure inside and outside and ornamental components of the interior, the harmonious proportions and crafted application of traditional building materials. The farmhouse is defining of the street scene.
