Inleiding

Introduction

Partly rendered CRUCK HOUSE with attached barn under hipped roof, built in Traditional-craftsmanship style and dating from 17th-19th centuries. The house is picturesquely situated in the original, now only rudimentarily existing centre of Middelrode, in a bend of an old road, near the bridge over the Aa. Three old linden trees in front of the house. Originally used as a farmhouse, brewery and inn, since c. 1930 as dwelling house and barn. Major renovation of Assendelftseweg 4 in 1999.

Description

The oldest core of the whole consists of a single-storey dwelling house and former brewery (Assendelftseweg 6) under gabled roof with half-hipped ends on both short sides. On the right side a more or less self-contained building section (Assendelftseweg 4), possibly the former inn, is built transversely against it under gabled roof. One side of the roof is partially hipped, the other side is half-hipped. On the left side of the dwelling house a barn under hipped roof is attached. The barn roof is raised along its entire length at street level in accordance with the height of the doors of the transverse section, so the roof is half-hipped on the left. At the rear a part of the barn is adjoined to the kitchen of the dwelling house. For the sake of a new kitchen door and window the roof has been raised locally here. The complex originally covered with reed and strips of tiles is now covered with muffled Mulden tiles.

The walls of the dwelling house are entirely rendered, the extension on the right is roughly rendered and the barn on the left has only a cement plinth. In the render layer of the front facade of the dwelling house strokes are indicated in relief above several windows. The barn walls are built from orange-red hand-formed bricks in IJssel format, the rear of the dwelling house was renewed in the second half of the 19th century in orange brick (22.5 x 11 x 5 cm) in stretcher bond. The doors are painted green, the frames and windows white.

The layout of the facades is as follows: The asymmetrical front facade of the dwelling house consists of one storey with an attic floor. The facade is three-bay: a solid front door with six-light fanlight is flanked on either side by a 20-light sash window, wider on the right than on the left. Although the shutters have disappeared, the frames have three inches on each side and are provided with a closing rod. The door has an authentic lock plate. The attic floor has two small windows with renewed T-windows. The left side facade is, above a rendered plinth, built from regular grey-red brick in stretcher bond (second half of 19th century). Two T-windows with casements and a large fixed two-light kitchen window. The completely rendered right facade has two four-light casements, a fixed two-light window and a door. Six rod anchors. The regularly built rear facade of orange brick with snapped joint is raised directly below the half-hipped end with a strip of c. 50 cm of reused yellow IJssel stone. Originally there may have been an open ventilation strip here for the brewery. The roof could therefore not rest on the rear facade. To compensate for this lack, the roof beams pass through the rear facade. Two sloping braces parallel to the rear facade are placed on these, which support a heavy oak beam on which the roof truss then rests. The location of a large cellar is marked just above ground level by two arched cellar windows with two iron bars each. Above it the twelve-light sash window with inches of the sleeping room. At attic level there are three arched ventilation openings each with two iron bars and shutters with original hinges. The rightmost opening was later enlarged to a rectangular hatch with hoisting beam. The rear facade shows traces on the left and right below the sloping roof planes of alterations in different brick type, partly with IJssel stone. On the right wattling, of which a trace is still visible on the left as well. Below the left sloping facade plane an authentic, possibly repositioned, but now out of use window with small glazing bars: a four-light fanlight above and a twelve-light sash window with double clamped shutters covering only the sash window. Various building traces. Below the right sloping facade plane a small square window, below which a window out of use with centre post and double shutters. The right extension (Assendelftsestraat 6), which steps back slightly with the exception of a narrow strip against the dwelling house (Assendelftsestraat 4) in which an entrance was located in the latter part of the 19th century, has in the single-storey facade at street level two renewed six-light windows with casements and fixed fanlights. Between two S-shaped wall anchors 5 beam holes are situated at regular intervals. The short side facade is completely blind and also has 5 beam holes and a rod anchor at attic height. The rendered rear facade has a four-light casement/awning window and three rod anchors. A brick chimney centrally on the roof. During a renovation in 1999 this building section was demolished down to its perimeter walls.

The barn, entirely on the left, has on the side of the dwelling house a solid door with four-light fanlight, next to it on the left a small square window and large double doors with secondary light openings. Next to it the double half-doors which extend to the roof edge. The original openings have roll mouldings at the top. The side facade is completely blind. The rear facade has no half-doors, but except for the section adjoining the kitchen only a solid door and a two-part window with centre post and inches and a small square window at the far right.

The dwelling house and former brewery has internally five partly complete oak anchor tie-beam frames with carpenters' marks sawn into the corners, possibly still 17th century. The beam ceilings, possibly latter part of 19th century, and the posts of the frame structure are hidden from view by later claddings. The layout, with a hallway behind the front door and rooms on either side, probably originated in the latter part of the 19th century. From this period also various finely moulded panel doors. Due to the new layout the original fireplace, almost directly opposite the front door, has been changed into a narrow storage space. The wide fireplace has a moulded ochre-coloured painted mantle beam and a back wall of white and dark tiles on their points in chequerboard pattern. In the middle a cracked, heavily worn cast-iron hearth plate with unclear depiction (18th century). The chimney is built from IJssel stone. Behind the fireplace lies the entrance to a large cellar with plastered segmental barrel vault, which according to a construction seam may have been extended towards the rear for the brewery function. The cellar is accessible via a stone staircase with five steps. The stairwell is covered by a heavy wooden hatch that slopes upwards with wooden steps attached providing access to the sleeping room with arched panel door (18th century). A small part of the cellar is assigned to Assendelftseweg 4 by means of a stone dividing wall, from which it is also accessible behind a panel door. A simple open wooden staircase leads to the attic consisting of a large space which, according to the ventilation possibilities and openings in the rear facade sketched above, must have had a function in the brewing process. Four collar tie-beams overhanging on both sides made of halved softwood with mortise and tenon joints rest on the anchor tie-beam frames. A roof truss with tiebeams, all of softwood, rests on the roof beams. During the 1999 renovation a complete clay wattle wall was uncovered at the height of the division between house numbers 4 and 6.

The barn has four anchor tie-beam frames, partly oak, partly softwood. As a result of high water levels of the nearby Aa the sections of the anchor beams between the posts have been raised. Sloping roof rafters with a collar beam and braces rest on these. The rafters are strengthened by means of cleats placed on the posts. Round timber roof trusses with tiebeams rest on the collar beam.

Valuation

The former farmhouse/brewery/inn is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a socio-economic development, as an example of a rural brewery and former inn in combination with a farming enterprise. The building has architectural-historical value because of the internally and externally well-preserved main structure and the traditional use of materials as well as because of components of the interior. It has ensemble value because of its connection to the historical-spatial development of the village of Middelrode and is highly characteristic of the streetscape as the almost last remnant of the original location of the village. As a former rural brewery, of which components such as cellar, rear facade and drying loft are still clearly present, the building represents, also due to the special construction of the ventilating roof, a typological rarity.
