Inleiding
Tussen de berm van de Rijksweg-Noord en de lager gelegen westelijke oever van de Zuid-Willemsvaart ligt ter hoogte van de Franciscanessenstraat S-KAZEMAT K16. De kazemat maakt deel uit van een snoer kazematten langs de Zuid-Willemsvaart dat tot doel had eventuele overschrijding van dit kanaal door de vijand te voorkomen.
Beschrijving De kazemat is vanaf de Rijksweg niet zichtbaar; dit vanwege de dichte begroeiing met bomen en struiken op het tamelijk steile talud tussen de berm van de Rijksweg en het lager gelegen kanaal. Overigens is de kazemat gaaf en zijn er geen zichtbare sporen van gevechtshandelingen. Alle openingen zijn dichtgemaakt.
Waardering
De kazemat is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en geografische ontwikkeling, namelijk de versterking en daaropvolgende verdediging van Nederland tijdens de Tweede wereldoorlog en is als zodanig een belangrijk document van de militaire geschiedenis. Het object is architectuur- en bouwhistorisch van belang wegens het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de toepassing van moderne materialen en technieken, met name in de verwerking van gewapend beton. Het object is ook van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van diverse verdedigingsobjecten- en structuren inzake de nationale landsverdediging. Het heeft ensemblewaarden als essentieel onderdeel van een groter geheel: enerzijds als onderdeel van de landsverdediging (het geheel aan stellingen aan de vooravond van de Tweede Wereldoorlog), en anderzijds als belangrijk (structurerend) onderdeel van het Peelgebied dat als militair landschap cultuurhistorisch van belang is. De kazemat heeft een bijzondere historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met wegen, wateren en bodemgesteldheid van het gebied. Deze verweving geeft het complex ook een grote belevingswaarde. Verder moet gewezen worden op de gaafheid van het gehele complex. Between the verge of the Rijksweg-Noord and the lower-lying western bank of the Zuid-Willemsvaart at the level of the Franciscanessenstraat lies S-CASEMATE K16. The casemate forms part of a series of casemates along the Zuid-Willemsvaart which was intended to prevent any crossing of this canal by the enemy.
Description The casemate is not visible from the Rijksweg; this due to dense vegetation with trees and shrubs on the fairly steep slope between the verge of the Rijksweg and the lower-lying canal. Incidentally, the casemate is intact and there are no visible signs of combat activity. All openings have been sealed.
