Inleiding
De Grebbe is tegenwoordig, anno 2002, een overkluisd riool onder de binnenstad van Bergen op Zoom. De Grebbe kent een lange geschiedenis, die ten nauwste verbonden is met het ontstaan van het cultuurlandschap van de Brabantse Wal en omgeving en van de stad Bergen op Zoom. In de dertiende eeuw is de Grebbe gegraven als afwateringskanaal. Later kwam daar de functie van turfvaart bij. Toen vond nadere kanalisatie plaats. Vanaf de veertiende eeuw tot in de twintigste eeuw werd de Grebbe geleidelijk overkluisd door bruggen, straten, pleinen en (uitbreidingen van) gebouwen. De Grebbe werd een riool, een functie die het tot op de huidige dag gehouden heeft. Door de lange wordingsgeschiedenis is een veelvoud aan constructies en materialen toegepast, die het monument een staalkaart laten zijn van ontwikkelingen op gebied van weg- en waterbouw en aanverwante terreinen.
Omschrijving
De Grebbe, riool onder de stad Bergen op Zoom, is ongeveer 800 m lang. De Grebbe loopt van het Ravelijn (oostzijde van de stad) tot aan het Spuihuis (westzijde). Het tracé volgt en/of passeert van oost naar west onder andere de Geweldigerstraat, het Sint-Catharinaplein, het Markiezenhof, het Beursplein en de Moeregrebstraat.
De Grebbe bestaat uit diverse vormen van beschoeiingen, wanden en overkluizingen, onder andere in bak- en ledesteen. Latere toevoegingen en herstellingen onder andere in beton. Vanwege de lange ontstaansgeschiedenis zijn diverse constructies (zoals verschillende boogvormen) toegepast. Tevens zijn gedeelten van oude bruggen in de Grebbe opgenomen.
Waardering
De Grebbe, het ongeveer 800 m lange ondergrondse riool onder de binnenstad van Bergen op Zoom, is van algemeen belang vanwege:
- historie, vanwege de relatie met het ontstaan van Bergen op Zoom en het omliggende landschap (afwaterings- en turfvaart, later riool);

Introduction
The Grebbe is nowadays, in the year 2002, a covered sewer beneath the city centre of Bergen op Zoom. The Grebbe has a long history, which is closely connected to the emergence of the cultural landscape of the Brabantse Wal and surrounding area and of the city of Bergen op Zoom. In the thirteenth century the Grebbe was dug as a drainage canal. Later it acquired the function of peat transport. Then further canalization took place. From the fourteenth century through to the twentieth century the Grebbe was gradually covered over by bridges, streets, squares and (extensions of) buildings. The Grebbe became a sewer, a function which it has retained to the present day. Due to the long history of its development, a multitude of constructions and materials have been applied, making the monument a sampler of developments in the field of road and water engineering and related areas.
Description
The Grebbe, a sewer beneath the city of Bergen op Zoom, is approximately 800 m long. The Grebbe runs from the Ravelijn (east side of the city) to the Spuihuis (west side). The route follows and/or passes from east to west amongst others along the Geweldigerstraat, the Sint-Catharinaplein, the Markiezenhof, the Beursplein and the Moeregrebstraat.
The Grebbe consists of various forms of revetments, walls and covered sections, including brick and sandstone. Later additions and repairs include concrete amongst others. Due to the long history of its development various constructions (such as different arch forms) have been applied. Furthermore, sections of old bridges have been incorporated into the Grebbe.
