Omschrijving onderdeel 2: PARKAANLEG.
PARKAANLEG, bestaande uit a. oprijlaan b. Engels parkje c. lanen met bos- en weidepercelen d. moestuin e. huiserf.
Aan de oostzijde raakt de aanleg aan de aanleg van de buitenplaats Mataram. Aan de noordkant volgt de begrenzing de bospercelen.
Ad a.: de oprijlaan, XVIII, bestaat uit drie étappes, met elkaar verbonden door twee haakse bochten; het eerste, bijna geheel rechte traject loopt vanaf de Poppenallee naar het zuiden tot aan de eerste haakse bocht bij het Witte Huis (zie onder 6); dit traject is beplant met jonge zomereik; na de bocht het tweede stuk, dat langs de noordzijde van de moestuin loopt naar het westen; hierlangs staat een onregelmatige beplanting van stukken oude linden, eiken en beuken; na de tweede haakse bocht om de min of meer vierkante moestuin heen loopt het laatste kortste traject tot aan het met grind verharde erf bij het koetshuis (zie onder 3); hierlangs staan dubbele rijen beuken; de gehele oprijlaan is verhard met asfalt.
Ad b.: het Engels parkje, midden XIX of ouder, met diverse soorten oude bomen ligt direct schuin achter het huis en tuinmanshuis annex koetshuis, i.e. aan de zuidwestkant; het ligt op een groter en een kleiner eiland omringd door watergangen: deels een smalle rechte gracht en deels een bredere waterpartij met bochten; de watergangen zijn alle delen, c.q. omleidingen en/of vergravingen van de Emmer tochtsloot; twee oude loofboomgroepen in de weilanden direct naast en achter het parkje spelen een belangrijke landschappelijk-visuele rol, evenals de brede oude beekarm (van de tochtsloot), die in oost-west richting door de weilanden ten zuidoosten van het huis loopt en met het water rond de eilandjes verbonden is; op het "grote" eiland ligt een kleine vijver met ernaast een heuveltje; over de watergangen liggen bruggetjes (zie verder onder 8).
Ad c.: het rechtlijnige lanenpatroon met bos en weidepercelen, XVIII, is kenmerkend voor de buitenplaats. Naast de al genoemde oprijlaan zijn er diverse elkaar kruisende lanen met bos- en weidepercelen. Aan de westkant van het huis loopt een lange beukenlaan met enkele rijen parallel aan de tochtsloot; deze zandlaan staat loodrecht op de Poppenallee. De beukenlaan wordt halverwege gekruist door de zuidwest-noordoost lopende dwarsas van de aanleg. Deze is samengesteld uit het gedeelte laan naar het dorpje Wijthmen ten westen van De Horte; hij loopt aan de andere kant in een rechte lijn door langs de moestuin naar het oostelijk deel van het complex, even onderbroken -zowel fysiek als visueel- door het Witte Huis. De laan van west naar oost: onregelmatige beplanting met oude eiken en beuken tot aan de moestuin, geen verharding, dan het reeds besproken deel (middendeel) van de oprijlaan en verder -achter het Witte Huis- enkele rijen lariks, geen verharding. De dwarsas of middenlaan eindigt bij een onverharde laan, die vroeger als schietbaan dienst deed; aan het zuidelijke einde ervan ligt op het terrein van de buitenplaats Mataram de zgn. Kogelvanger: een laag zandheuveltje; het zuidelijk deel van deze noordwest-zuidoost lopende laan is met enkele rijen eiken beplant, het noordelijk deel met enkele beukenrijen. Het noordelijke laandeel loopt niet tot aan de Poppenallee, maar buigt met een haakse bocht in zuidwestelijke richting af naar de oprijlaan en in noordoostelijke richting naar de begrenzing met de buitenplaats Mataram. De laan, ook onverhard, heet Groenelaan en heeft enkele rijen beuk. Ten zuidoosten van de Groenelaan ligt een rabattenbos met een slingerpad dat al op de TMK van omstreeks 1850 wordt aangegeven. De rest van het complex bestaat ook uit weilanden, behalve twee bospercelen ten noorden van het huis westelijk van de oprijlaan en ten noorden van de laan naar Wijthmen; langs een van de bosjes loopt een restant van de Emmertochtsloot, thans de Krommesloot genaamd.
Ad d.: de moestuin, in oorsprong XVIII, op vierkante plattegrond is omgeven door een smalle gracht en ligt direct ten noorden van het huis; de geometrische indeling (met buxusheggetjes), waarvan de middenas op de voordeur van het huis georiënteerd is, is in de jaren tachtig van de 20ste eeuw gerestaureerd; via een in de as liggende dam bereikt men vanaf het huiserf de moestuin; aan het einde van de as ligt over de noordelijke grachtarm een smal witgeschilderd houten ophaalbruggetje van jonge datum. Halverwege de as ligt een ronde vijver; langs de westelijke en oostelijke grachtarmen staan beukenhagen, langs de noordarm een vernieuwde houten zwartgeteerde schutting, langs de zuidarm, links en rechts van de dam, struikensingels; in de noordoosthoek van de tuin staat een oude solitaire mammouthboom; verder in de moestuin een druivenkas en een tuinschuur (zie onder 9); op de dam staat een laag hek (zie onder 10).
Ad e.: het min of meer vierkante huiserf, XVIII, betreft het terrein rond het huis en tussen het huis en de tuinmanswoning annex koetshuis; het is aan drie zijden (noord, oost en zuid) omgeven door water; de oost- en zuidwatergang verbindt de moestuingracht met het water rond de parkeilandjes; het erf bestaat uit grasveldjes en grindpaden; tussen huis en koetshuis staat een groepje oude eiken en, schuin achter het huis het prieel (zie onder 7); langs de grachtarm tussen het huis en de moestuin staan enkele oude leilinden.
Waardering
De PARKAANLEG, behorend tot de historische buitenplaats De Horte, is van algemeen cultuur- en tuinhistorisch belang:
- wegens de ouderdom;
- wegens de cultuurhistorische en landschappelijk-visuele waarden;
- wegens de grote mate van gaafheid in combinatie met het ensemble van de gebouwen;
- wegens de combinatie van de geometrische lanenstructuur en de kleine Engelse aanleg.

PARK LAYOUT, consisting of a. drive b. English garden c. lanes with woodland and meadow parcels d. kitchen garden e. house plot.
On the east side the layout adjoins the layout of the country estate Mataram. On the north side the boundary follows the woodland parcels.
Ad a.: the drive, 18th century, consists of three sections, connected to each other by two right-angle bends; the first, almost entirely straight section runs from the Poppenallee southwards to the first right-angle bend at the Witte Huis (see below under 6); this section is planted with young oak; after the bend the second section, which runs along the north side of the kitchen garden to the west; alongside this is an irregular planting of old lime, oak and beech; after the second right-angle bend around the more or less square kitchen garden runs the last shortest section to the gravel-surfaced plot by the coach house (see below under 3); alongside this stand double rows of beech; the entire drive is surfaced with asphalt.
Ad b.: the English garden, mid-19th century or older, with diverse species of old trees lies directly behind the house and gardener's house adjoining coach house, i.e. on the south-west side; it lies on a larger and a smaller island surrounded by waterways: partly a narrow straight ditch and partly a wider water feature with bends; the waterways are all sections, respectively diversions and/or excavations of the Emmer tochtsloot; two old deciduous tree groups in the meadows directly beside and behind the garden play an important landscape-visual role, as does the broad old watercourse arm (of the tochtsloot), which runs in an east-west direction through the meadows south-east of the house and is connected to the water around the islets; on the "large" island lies a small pond with beside it a small hill; across the waterways lie small bridges (see further below under 8).
Ad c.: the rectilinear lane pattern with woodland and meadow parcels, 18th century, is characteristic of the country estate. Besides the aforementioned drive there are various intersecting lanes with woodland and meadow parcels. On the west side of the house runs a long beech lane with single rows parallel to the tochtsloot; this sand lane stands perpendicular to the Poppenallee. The beech lane is crossed halfway by the south-west-north-east running cross-axis of the layout. This is composed of the section lane to the village Wijthmen to the west of De Horte; on the other side it runs in a straight line past the kitchen garden to the eastern part of the complex, interrupted only - both physically and visually - by the Witte Huis. The lane from west to east: irregular planting with old oak and beech as far as the kitchen garden, no surfacing, then the already discussed section (middle section) of the drive and further - behind the Witte Huis - single rows of larch, no surfacing. The cross-axis or middle lane ends at an unsurfaced lane, which formerly served as a shooting range; at its southern end on the grounds of the country estate Mataram lies the so-called Kogelvanger: a low sand hill; the southern section of this north-west-south-east running lane is planted with single rows of oak, the northern section with single rows of beech. The northern lane section does not extend to the Poppenallee, but bends with a right-angle bend in a south-westerly direction towards the drive and in a north-easterly direction towards the boundary with the country estate Mataram. The lane, also unsurfaced, is called Groenelaan and has single rows of beech. South-east of the Groenelaan lies a rabatten woodland with a winding path which is already indicated on the TMK from around 1850. The remainder of the complex also consists of meadows, except for two woodland parcels north of the house west of the drive and north of the lane to Wijthmen; along one of the copses runs a remnant of the Emmertochtsloot, now called the Krommesloot.
Ad d.: the kitchen garden, originally 18th century, on square plan is surrounded by a narrow ditch and lies directly north of the house; the geometric layout (with box hedges), of which the central axis is oriented on the front door of the house, was restored in the 1980s; via a dam lying on the axis one reaches the kitchen garden from the house plot; at the end of the axis lies across the northern ditch arm a narrow white-painted wooden drawbridge of recent date. Halfway along the axis lies a round pond; along the western and eastern ditch arms stand beech hedges, along the northern arm a renewed wooden black-tarred fence, along the southern arm, left and right of the dam, shrub borders; in the north-east corner of the garden stands an old solitary mammoth tree; further in the kitchen garden a grape house and a garden shed (see below under 9); on the dam stands a low fence (see below under 10).
Ad e.: the more or less square house plot, 18th century, concerns the ground around the house and between the house and the gardener's house adjoining coach house; it is surrounded by water on three sides (north, east and south); the east and south waterway connects the kitchen garden ditch with the water around the park islets; the plot consists of grass fields and gravel paths; between house and coach house stands a group of old oak and, behind the house the pavilion (see below under 7); along the ditch arm between the house and the kitchen garden stand several old Linden trees.
Valuation
The PARK LAYOUT, belonging to the historic country estate De Horte, is of general cultural and garden-historical importance:
- on account of its age;
- on account of its cultural-historical and landscape-visual values;
- on account of the high degree of integrity in combination with the ensemble of buildings;
- on account of the combination of the geometric lane structure and the small English layout.
