Inleiding
Het ruïnecomplex genaamd Cattentoren, gesitueerd aan de Wilhelminasingel, onderdeel uitmakend van de middeleeuwse vesting van de stad Roermond, staat binnen de grens van het beschermde stadsgezicht Roermond.
Omschrijving
Het ruïnecomplex, bekend als de Cattentoren, bestaat uit (1) de in of kort na 1388 in baksteen en mergel aangelegde stadsmuur, die sinds het begin van de 18e eeuw grotendeels is overdekt door een aarden wal, (2) twee (restanten van) opstallen, t.w. een kelder van (vermoedelijk) een wachthuisje en (de fundamenten van) een kazemat met halfronde hoeken, te dateren tussen het eind van de 16e en het begin van de 18e eeuw en (3) een (restant van een) hoektoren zijnde de hoefijzervormige Cattentoren, gebouwd in of kort na 1388 en verwoest in 1702. Inwendig o.m. een aanzet van een weergangsboog, een taps toelopend schietgat, twee bakstenen trappen (waarvan één met een restant van een hardstenen dektrede) en in de kelder een spitsboog.

The ruin complex, known as the Cattentoren, consists of (1) the town wall laid out in or shortly after 1388 in brick and marl, which since the early 18th century has been largely covered by an earthen rampart, (2) two (remains of) structures, namely a cellar of (presumably) a guard house and (the foundations of) a casemate with semicircular corners, to be dated between the late 16th and early 18th century and (3) a (remnant of a) corner tower being the horseshoe-shaped Cattentoren, built in or shortly after 1388 and destroyed in 1702. Internally including among others a beginning of a crenellation arch, a tapered loophole, two brick stairs (one of which with a remnant of a hard stone covering stone) and in the cellar a pointed arch.
