Inleiding
Huis Waterloo: vrijstaande kasteelachtige villa gebouwd in de stijl van het Traditionalisme naar een ontwerp van C. en J. Franssen. Het pand werd gebouwd in 1922 en verbouwd in 1935. De villa is gebouwd in opdracht van markiezin Von Villers Grignoncourt van Nispen tot Sevenaer. De villa is gesitueerd in een parkachtige tuin met een oprijlaan met beuken; enkele bijzondere solitairen o.a. sequoia en diverse boomgroepen en gazons.
Aan de linkerzijgevel een uitbouw in een bouwlaag uit omstreeks 1960. De bijgebouwde garage is uitgesloten van bescherming.
Omschrijving
Vrijstaande kasteelachtige villa op een rechthoekige plattegrond. Het vierkante hoofdvolume telt twee bouwlagen onder een schilddak. Ingangspartij in een vooruitspringend geveldeel met trapgevel en zadeldak. Aan de zuidoostzijde een torenbouw in drie bouwlagen met een ingesnoerd tentdak. De villa wordt afgedekt met vernieuwde leien daken. Dakkapellen; nokpionnen op dak en dakkapellen. De villa heeft gevels in baksteen gemetseld in kruisverband; rechthoekige kruisvensters met roedeverdeling; bakstenen dorpelstenen, rollagen en strek. Gemetselde gootlijst met muizetand onder de dakrand.
Middendeel voorgevel vooruitspringend en uitlopend in een trapgevel. Voordeur in een rondboogvormig portiek met natuurstenen treden. Aan de bovenzijde van het portiek sluitsteen met familiewapen. In het portiek aan de rechterzijde een authentieke zandstenen brievenbus; aan de linkerzijde een zandstenen gevelsteen. Rondboogvormige houten voordeur met smeedijzeren beslag. Aan weerszijden van het portiek uitgebouwde bakstenen muurtjes.
Middendeel voorgevel uitlopend in een trapgevel; trappen met ezelsrug. In de smalle zijgevels van vooruitspringend geveldeel in de eerste en tweede bouwlaag een smal venster met traliewerk.
Rechterdeel voorgevel met in eerste en tweede bouwlaag een kruisvenster met kleine roedeverdeling. Keldervenstertje met traliewerk. Linkerdeel voorgevel met vierkante torenbouw in drie bouwlagen. In voor- en zijgevel in elke bouwlaag een kruisvenster. Middendeel linkerzijgevel iets vooruitspringend met hierin drie hoge smalle glas-in-lood vensters. Aan de bovenzijde van de glas-in-lood venster een kruisvenster. Dit geveldeel eveneens uitlopend in een trapgevel. Linkerdeel linkerzijgevel met in eerste bouwlaag een aanbouw in een bouwlaag en in de tweede bouwlaag een kruisvenster.
Asymmetrische indeling achtergevel. Authentieke houten achterdeur met smeedijzer beslag; drie hardstenen treden. Achterdeur onder een niet-authentiek glazen luifeltje. Aan weerszijden van de deur een uitgebouwd bakstenen muurtje. In de eerste bouwlaag twee kruisvensters. In het rechterdeel van de achtergevel drie kleine vensters. In de tweede bouwlaag drie kruisvensters; in het middendeel twee smalle vensters met hierboven twee kleine venstertjes.
Het linkerdeel van de achtergevel met vanaf de tweede bouwlaag een uitkragend vijfzijdig hoektorentje met aan de benedenzijde getrapt metselwerk In dit hoektorentje drie hoge smalle vensters. Onder dakrand vijf kleine venstertjes. Achtergeveldakvlak met drie dakkapellen.
Rechterzijgevel met in de eerste en tweede bouwlaag telkens drie kruisvensers. Twee kleine keldervensters met traliewerk. Een groot kelderluik. Dakvlak met twee dakkapellen.
Authentieke interieurindeling. Van het interieur is onder meer het volgende van belang.
Vestibule met authentieke witte marmeren vloertegels; dubbele tochtdeuren met glaspaneeltjes. Drie bakstenen rondbogen naar de grote hal. Tegen de achterwand van de hal een imposante schouw deels in zandsteen uitgevoerd. Deze schouw dateert uit omstreeks 1938. Hal met witte marmeren vloertegels en hoge houten lambrisering. Authentieke paneeldeuren met hang- en sluitwerk deels in koper. Deuren met authentieke kroonlijsten. In de salon een haardlijst in zwart marmer; authentieke schuifdeuren naar de eetzaal. In de eetzaal een haardlijst in zwart marmer; plafond met stucwerk ornamenten. Tussen de eetzaal en de salon de bediendentrap. Aan de linkerzijde van de hal een brede eikenhouten trap met spijlen en geornamenteerde leuningen; op de overloop halverwege de trap deelt de trap in tweeën en gaat naar de eerste verdieping. Aan de linkerzijde van de vestibule de authentieke toiletruimte met vloer in zwarte en witte tegels. Keuken met authentieke vloer met zwarte en witte tegels en grote schouw.
In de hal op de verdieping plafond met balken rustend op natuurstenen consoles. In de zit- en slaapkamer van de markiezin op de eerste verdieping plafonds met stucwerk ornamenten; kooflijsten en marmeren haardlijsten.
Waardering
De kasteelachtige villa uit 1920 is van architectuurhistorische waarde als gaaf en goed voorbeeld van een voornaam woonhuis in de stijl van het Traditionalisme dat opvalt vanwege de esthetische kwaliteiten die onder meer tot uitdrukking komen in het materiaalgebruik en de bewaard gebleven fraaie interieuronderdelen uit de bouwtijd. Het pand is tevens van belang als een van de zeldzame woonhuisontwerpen in het oeuvre van de architecten Caspar en Jos Franssen. Het pand heeft typologische waarde vanwege de kasteelachtige allure met de diverse torens en trapgevels. Het pand bezit ensemblewaarde vanwege de situering in een parkachtige tuin met oprijlaan, gazons en boomgroepen. Het pand is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische en cultuurhistorische zeldzaamheid en de hoge mate van gaafheid van het in- en exterieur.

The villa is covered with renewed slate roofs. Roof dormers; roof ridge ornaments on roof and roof dormers. The villa has facades of brick masonry in bond; rectangular cross windows with glazing bars; brick threshold stones, brick courses and courses. Rendered gutter line with sawtooth under the roof edge.

Vestibule with authentic white marble floor tiles; double draught doors with glass panes. Three brick round arches to the great hall. Against the rear wall of the hall an imposing fireplace partly executed in sandstone. This fireplace dates from around 1938. Hall with white marble floor tiles and high wooden wall panelling. Authentic panel doors with hinges and latches partly in copper. Doors with authentic cornices. In the salon a fireplace mantelpiece in black marble; authentic sliding doors to the dining room. In the dining room a fireplace mantelpiece in black marble; ceiling with stucco ornaments. Between the dining room and the salon the servants' staircase. On the left side of the hall a broad oak staircase with balusters and ornamented banisters; on the landing halfway up the staircase the staircase divides into two and goes to the first floor. The building is also of importance as one of the rare residential house designs in the oeuvre of architects Caspar and Jos Franssen. The building has typological value because of its castle-like character with the various towers and stepped gables. The building possesses ensemble value because of its location in a park-like garden with driveway, lawns and tree groups. The building is of general importance because of the architectural-historical and cultural-historical rarity and the high degree of integrity of the interior and exterior.
