The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

The churchyard chapel lies in the churchyard on the south side of the former Sint Vituskerk, which was destroyed in 1944. The chapel is placed centrally against the brick southern churchyard wall. This churchyard wall, as well as the remains of the church, are national monuments and registered under monument number 9034. The architectural style of the chapel has influences of Neo-classicism. The chapel probably dates from the last quarter of the 19th century.

Description

The chapel has a rectangular ground plan. The roof is supported on four pillars. On the pillars rests a roof structure with four inset gabled roofs with red ceramic roof tiles (=shingles) in Maas covering. The roof has a cruciform shape; the ridge line is crowned with three ceramic ridge ornaments. The pillars are of cemented masonry with imitation jointing. The pillars rest on a simple concrete base and likewise have a simple profiled concrete capital. Between the pillars are semicircular archways. Three gavel sections have a simple cemented pediment, set in a simple profiled moulding. In each tympanum is situated a death's head in stucco, with as inscription "memento mori". The rear gavel stands against the brick churchyard wall which has been raised at that point. The chapel has a plastered barrel vault, on a wooden framework over which cloth is stretched. In the semicircular niche between the pillars which are placed against the churchyard wall, stand three cast figures. In the centre stands a wooden cross with a corpus, with on either side an angel figure. The figures are placed on a cast, painted, cement altar with inscription "Consummatum est".

Valuation

The churchyard chapel represents a cultural-historical value as a special expression of Roman Catholic burial culture, as well as from a typological point of view. The architectural-historical values are determined by the neo-classicistic influences in the architectural style, the ornaments and the use of materials. The chapel remains in authentic condition. This architectural integrity contributes greatly to the rarity of the object. Ensemble values the chapel derives from its situation at the churchyard wall and the former Sint Vituskerk, as well as from the characteristic situation on the eastern bank of the Maas. The churchyard chapel represents general importance because of the entirety of the aforesaid values.
