Inleiding

- als voorbeeld van een terras behorende bij een expressionistisch landhuis uit de jaren 20 van de 20ste eeuw;

- voor het oeuvre van architect W. Hamdorff, die naast het huis ook verantwoordelijk was voor het ontwerp van de terrasaanleg;

Introduction

TERRACE LAYOUT belonging to villa 'Oranjestein', laid out around 1922 to the design of architect W. Hamdorff on commission of Mr W. Ouweleen. The terrace layout on the south-east side with the pond, watercourse, water supply system certainly belongs to the original design, in view of the preserved design drawing by Hamdorff. The water supply, which ran through a large part of the garden, was connected to the mains in 1954. Over time the iron pipes were partly replaced by PVC.

Wouter Hamdorff (1890-1965) was an architect who worked particularly in the Gooi region. He built his first major country houses in expressionistic, romantic style in Laren: Herdershoeve (1919), Oranjestein (1919) and his own house (1920-1922) at the Zevenenderdrift. The influence of the Amsterdam School is strongly present in his work. The traditional buildings of the region served as a starting point for the new country house: the Gooise farmhouse. Through the use of natural materials (brickwork, wood and thatch) the building integrated itself into the rural surroundings.

Description

Adjacent to the rear facade of the villa is a terrace, raised relative to the garden, with flagstones and masoned terrace walls. The gently curved, angled terrace is bounded by wrought-iron fencing and has a stairway to the garden on the west and on the east side. Below the terrace wall lies a spacious, curved pond in a concrete basin. In the terrace wall are a planter and a water spout. On the west side is a waterfall with rock blocks, which via an artificially constructed stream with concrete bedding empties into the pond. The waterfall is connected to a water supply which was originally fed by a spring in the cellar of the house.

Valuation

The TERRACE LAYOUT is of general cultural, architectural and garden-historical importance:

- as an example of a terrace belonging to an expressionistic country house from the 1920s;

- for the oeuvre of architect W. Hamdorff, who was responsible for the design of the terrace layout in addition to the house;

- due to the ensemble value through the historical-functional, spatial and visual relationship as an architectural continuation of the house.
