Inleiding

Introduction

The former SERVICE DWELLING for a prison guard was designed together with five adjacent identical service dwellings in 1883 by J. F. Metzelaar at the prison.

Metzelaar used his design plans for the dwellings at the prison in Arnhem as an example. On the north side of the site, outside the perimeter wall, stand six guard dwellings. On 20 February 1883 the houses (together with the prison and the director's dwellings) were put out to tender. They were built by contractors A.S. Schaafsma and J. Schaafsma from Harlingen. In June 1886 the dwellings, which were specially intended for married prison staff, were completed. The east side of the dwelling was partially built up in the sixties and provided with a new entrance section.

Description

The single-storey detached dwelling with attic storey has a T-shaped floor plan under a projecting gabled roof with wooden wind braces, the ridge is oriented north-south. The front facade is symmetrical in design. The facade has twelve brick courses of yellow brick, always two courses thick. On the ground floor a large window, consisting of two six-pane sash windows. Hardstone drip moulds. Window section spanned by segmental arch. Between ground floor and storey at floor height three wall anchors. On the storey a six-pane sash window.

The roof projection with five consoles on the front and rear sides. The east facade is asymmetrical. In the north facade the same six-pane sash window as on the storey of the front facade. Southern part of facade rebuilt (now two storeys with stepped gable). On the north side an extension entrance section under the roof of the new building section. Brick courses and wall anchors identical to front facade.
