The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

The GATE of the complex is located on the parallel road of the national highway at the entrance to the grounds. Behind the gatehouse, a long drive flanked by tall linden trees provides access to the rest of the grounds. The gate built in the traditional forms of the Delft School presumably dates, like components I and II, from the period 1936-1940. After the war various sculptures and plaques were added.

Description.

The gate is a large rectangular building block of substantial hand-formed brickwork, laid in chain bond, with a single arched entrance opening with a segmental arch. The gate has a saddle roof with Maas-style slated tiles. On the sides the brickwork is slightly constricted and at the height of the frieze projects outward again. The gate is ornamented with, among other things, a segmental arch frieze, a memorial plaque for the victims of the Second World War and the people who were imprisoned in the main building, reliefs by Jan Engelman dating from 1968 including a pieta. Centrally above the gate a sculptural portrait with plinth is placed. Furthermore, plaques with episcopal coats of arms are applied and, on the rear side of the gate, two free-standing holy statues of priest-martyrs (Augustine and Aloysius?) which presumably date from the end of the previous century. The gate can be closed with a Gothic ornamented wrought-iron ironwork from the construction period.

Valuation.

The gate on the grounds of the former Grand Seminary in Haaren, now Haarendael, is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical values as a particular expression of spiritual and typological developments. From the building complex, the rise, flourishing and decline of priest training in the Netherlands can be well read.

It has architectural-historical values because of the importance of the aforementioned objects within the oeuvre of professor/architect M.J. Granpré-Molière. Ensemble values because of its location connected with the development of the ever-expanding building complex of the former Grand Seminary. It is of importance because of the structural and visual integrity in relation to the landscape setting and because of the high-quality architectural quality of the constituent parts. It has rarity value because of the architectural-historical and typological rarity of such a former Grand Seminary.
