The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

The east-west running PASSAGE with centrally placed GATEHOUSE forms the connection between two older wings of the Grand Seminary. The passage was constructed between 1936 and 1940 simultaneously with the church and is built in the same traditional design of the Delft School. Of interest are the paintings that are applied against the wooden vault.

Description.

Elongated building block on a rectangular ground plan with a gatehouse projection in the middle. The walls of this single-storey section are built in fair-faced brickwork. The whole is covered by a gabled roof with Maas-style slated tiles. Internally the floor of the passage is paved with large square tiles, has walls in fair-faced brickwork and is arched with a wooden segmental barrel vault with wooden tie beams. Polychrome paintings with religious themes are applied at these beams and in the corners. The paintings have since faded considerably. Light access in the passage is provided by narrow, tall semicircular arch windows. The passage has in the middle, by means of a large segmental arch gate, an exit to the inner courtyard of the seminary and to the south a passage to the rectangular atrium of the church. This entrance section is built higher than the passage and connects by means of a transverse gabled roof to the atrium of the church.

Valuation.

The gatehouse with passage on the grounds of the former Grand Seminary in Haaren, now Haarendael, is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical values as a particular expression of spiritual and typological developments. From the building complex, the rise, flourishing and decline of priest training in the Netherlands can be well read. It has architectural-historical values because of the importance of the aforementioned objects within the oeuvre of professor/architect M.J. Granpré-Molière. Ensemble values because of its location connected with the development of the ever-expanding building complex of the former Grand Seminary.

It is of importance because of the structural and visual integrity in relation to the landscape setting and because of the high-quality architectural quality of the constituent parts. It has rarity value because of the architectural-historical and typological rarity of such a former Grand Seminary.
