The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

The HOTEL-RESIDENTIAL BUILDING, originally named NIEUW-STATIONSKOFFIEHUIS, was built in Eclectic style in 1879 after a design by architect C.P. van Genk commissioned by manufacturer A. Asselbergs. It stands on the corner of Stationsstraat and Zuidoostsingel. The building projects forward compared to the other houses in the building line. During renovations the interior decoration was completely altered. The building is similar in layout to the other corner building at number 14.

Description.

The block-shaped building of two and a half storeys has bevelled corner bays and features a compound hipped roof covered with black glazed tiles. The plastered facades are articulated by Corinthian pilasters, alternating between one and two bays. Between the bevelled corner bays on the ring-road side are five window axes with a door in the middle renewed around 1970. The sash windows on both sides were enlarged around 1930 and provided with a fanlight with leaded glass. On the far left is an ornamental fence of cast and wrought iron, furnished with scrollwork and spear points. On the first storey are pedestal windows with rounded shoulders and hoods. The attic storey is provided with two-light mezzanine windows. On the corner towards Stationsstraat is a renewed door under a curved frontispiece moulding and infilled windows. The five following bays follow the arrangement as above, except that on the ground floor an additional door was added and the middle bay recedes further, which is expressed in the cornice. In the bevelled corner on the right is a window. The rear facade is austere and contains T-windows with sandstone sills. A single-storey conservatory has been built on under a flat roof with wooden decorative mouldings. The windows were infilled during a renovation.

Valuation.

The building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a distinctive component of the urban development from the last quarter of the 19th century and the relationship it has to the development and expansion of the city; it is of importance for the development of the typology of the urban residential building in the 19th century. The building has architectural-historical value because of its balanced and careful composition and is of importance for the work of architect Van Genk. It is of particular significance for the appearance of the city and also of importance because of the integrity of its exterior. Because the designs of the buildings on Stationsstraat remained in one hand, there is a case of architectural-historical rarity.
