Inleiding.
Ten noorden van kazemat 39 staat op de westelijke kade van het Defensiekanaal de S (3a) KAZEMAT 38, daterende uit 1939-1940. De wal is ter plaatse aan de zijde van het kanaal gedeeltelijk afgegraven.
Omschrijving.
De kazemat geeft door de schietgaten flankerend en frontaal vuur op het voorterrein. De kazemat is gaaf bewaard gebleven en vertoont zware gevechtssporen. De gehele frontzijde is door artillerie, pantserafweergeschut en mitrailleurvuur zwaar beschadigd, waardoor delen van de wapening blootliggen. Verder zijn de schietgatluiken op vier plaatsen doorboord.
Waardering.
De kazemat is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en geografische ontwikkeling, namelijk de versterking en daaropvolgende verdediging van Nederland tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog en is als zodanig een belangrijk document van de militaire geschiedenis. Het is van architectuur- en bouwhistorisch belang wegens het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de toepassing van moderne materialen en technieken, met name in de verwerking van gewapend beton. Het heeft ensemblewaarden als essentieel onderdeel van een groter geheel, dat cultuurhistorisch van belang is en is van belang wegens de hoogwaardige kwaliteit van de bebouwing en de historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met wegen, wateren en bodemgesteldheid. North of casemate 39, on the western quay of the Defensiekanaal stands the S (3a) CASEMATE 38, dating from 1939-1940. The rampart has been partially excavated at this point on the canal side.

The casemate provides flanking and frontal fire on the forward terrain through its gun embrasures. The casemate has been well preserved and displays heavy combat damage. The entire front side has been severely damaged by artillery, anti-tank gun and machine-gun fire, exposing parts of the armament.
