Inleiding.
Ten noorden van Kazemat 539 staat op de westelijke kade van het Defensiekanaal de S (3a) KAZEMAT 45, daterende uit 1939-1940. De kazemat staat direct ten noorden van de brug in de Zuidelijke Bergseweg, die ter plaatse over het kanaal voert. De wal is ter plaatse afgegraven.
Omschrijving.
De kazemat geeft door de schietgaten flankerend en frontaal vuur op het voorterrein en de brug. De kazemat is gaaf bewaard gebleven en vertoont gevechtssporen. De gehele frontzijde is door mitrailleurvuur beschadigd.
Waardering.
De kazemat is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en geografische ontwikkeling, namelijk de versterking en daaropvolgende verdediging van Nederland tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog en is als zodanig een belangrijk document van de militaire geschiedenis. Het is van architectuur- en bouwhistorisch belang wegens het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de toepassing van moderne materialen en technieken, met name in de verwerking van gewapend beton. Het heeft ensemblewaarden als essentieel onderdeel van een groter geheel, dat cultuurhistorisch van belang is en is van belang wegens de hoogwaardige kwaliteit van de bebouwing en de historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met wegen, wateren en bodemgesteldheid. North of Casemate 539, on the western bank of the Defensiekanaal stands the S (3a) CASEMATE 45, dating from 1939-1940. The casemate stands directly north of the bridge in the Zuidelijke Bergseweg, which crosses the canal at this point. The embankment has been excavated at this location.
