Inleiding.
Ten noorden van kazemat 543 staat op de westelijke kade van het Defensiekanaal de S (3a) KAZEMAT 544, daterende uit 1939-1940. De kazemat ligt direct ten zuiden van de brug in de Graafseweg over het Defensiekanaal. De wal is ter plaatse afgegraven.
Omschrijving.
De kazemat geeft door de schietgaten flankerend en frontaal vuur op de brug, het kanaal en het voorterrein. De kazemat is gaaf bewaard gebleven en vertoont zware gevechtssporen. De gehele frontzijde is door pantserafweergeschut en mitrailleurvuur zwaar beschadigd, waardoor delen van de wapening blootliggen.
Waardering.
De kazemat is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en geografische ontwikkeling, namelijk de versterking en daaropvolgende verdediging van Nederland tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog en is als zodanig een belangrijk document van de militaire geschiedenis. Het is van architectuur- en bouwhistorisch belang wegens het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de toepassing van moderne materialen en technieken, met name in de verwerking van gewapend beton. Het heeft ensemblewaarden als essentieel onderdeel van een groter geheel, dat cultuurhistorisch van belang is en is van belang wegens de hoogwaardige kwaliteit van de bebouwing en de historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met wegen, wateren en bodemgesteldheid. North of casemate 543, on the western quay of the Defensiekanaal stands the S (3a) CASEMATE 544, dating from 1939-1940. The casemate is located directly south of the bridge in the Graafseweg over the Defensiekanaal. The embankment has been excavated at this location.
