Inleiding.
Ten noorden van kazemat 523 staat op de westelijke kade van het Defensiekanaal de S (3a) KAZEMAT 524, daterende uit 1939-1940. De wal is ter plaatse afgegraven.
Omschrijving.
De kazemat staat op een plaats waar het kanaal een scherpe bocht van negentig graden in noordwestelijke richting maakt. De kazemat is precies in de hoek van het kanaal geplaatst en geeft frontaal en flankerend vuur op het kanaal en het voorterrein. De kazemat is gaaf bewaard gebleven en vertoont, op enkele kogelinslagen aan de keelzijde na, geen gevechtsschade.
Waardering.
De kazemat is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en geografische ontwikkeling, namelijk de versterking en daaropvolgende verdediging van Nederland tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog en is als zodanig een belangrijk document van de militaire geschiedenis. Het is van architectuur- en bouwhistorisch belang wegens het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de toepassing van moderne materialen en technieken, met name in de verwerking van gewapend beton. Het heeft ensemblewaarden als essentieel onderdeel van een groter geheel, dat cultuurhistorisch van belang is en is van belangwegens de hoogwaardige kwaliteit van de bebouwing en de historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met wegen, wateren en bodemgesteldheid. North of casemate 523 stands on the western embankment of the Defence Canal the S (3a) CASEMATE 524, dating from 1939-1940. The embankment has been cut away at this location.

The casemate stands at a location where the canal makes a sharp ninety-degree bend in a northwesterly direction. The casemate is positioned precisely in the bend of the canal and delivers frontal and flanking fire on the canal and the foreground. The casemate has been well preserved and, apart from some bullet strikes on the throat side, shows no battle damage.
Valuation.
The casemate is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and as such is an important document of military history. It is of architectural and construction-historical importance because of the distinctive use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, in particular in the working of reinforced concrete.
