Omschrijving

Description

The Diamantenbolwerk dates from the beginning of the seventeenth century and was constructed on the proposal of Prince Maurits and by order of the States-General. It forms part of the fortifications of Hasselt, designed by Adriaen Anthoniszn in 1605 and actually constructed between 1606-1623. The Diamantenbolwerk is the southernmost bastion and was constructed on a sandbank in the river. The bastion protected the city against attackers approaching from the main route from the east over the river embankments and higher ground along the northern bank of the Vecht and the Zwartewater.

The location of the bastion on the river necessitated measures against the eroding effect of the river Zwartewater. Initially the earthen wall of the bastion was protected with planks, but these were soon replaced by a masonry protective wall (revêtement).

The protection concerns the outlines of the walled bastion, namely the eastern flank and face, the salient and the western face and flank, with the outlines of the adjoining parts of the fortifications, namely the curtain with Buiten Enkpoort and stone wharf on the north-eastern side, and the curtain with adjoining roundel and the foundation of the Binnen Enkpoort located inside the roundel on the north-western side. The extent of the protection corresponds to what has been designated as a protected national monument on the map dated 28 September 2004 attached to this designation. Both the outlines and the masonry and foundations still present at the location of the outlines are protected. The remains of the bastion are surrounded by water on two important sides, namely Haven de Beer at the eastern face and eastern flank and the river Zwartewater at the western face.

Valuation

The remains of the bastion have great cultural-historical value. They are of importance as an example of a component of a fortification with bastions and earthen walls constructed according to the "Old Dutch system".

The remains of the bastion are of importance to the oeuvre of Adriaen Anthoniszn.

The remains of the bastion are of great significance as an essential component of the fortifications of Hasselt. Together with the northerly located Meyersbolwerk they form a unique combination of two walled bastions on the riverfront. The presence of a fifteenth-century roundel makes the combination particularly special.

The remains of the bastion are unique for Northern Netherlands.
