Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Former LOCK in the most westerly canal section, at the beginning of the Afwateringskanaal opposite the Noordervaart. The lock is opposite Kanaaldijk 3, precisely on the border between the municipalities of Meijel and Helden (Beringe district).
In 1854 the Minister of Interior gave Rijkswaterstaat in the Duchy of Limburg the commission for the design of two locks in the Afwateringskanaal. Near the road from Helden to Neer lies a second lock. Following Rijkswaterstaat's design drawings from 1859, contractor J.L. Baudrihaye built both locks for f 45,000. The locks were put into service in 1861.
In the period 1884-1886 the original wooden lock walls were demolished and newly built in stone. This work was carried out for f 28,709.50 by contractor P. Ubachs from Nieuwstadt. Since 1932, when the canal was closed to shipping, the lock has no longer been used as such. The lock gates and part of the operating mechanism have now disappeared. Near the lock lies the former lock keeper's house which falls outside state protection.
Description
Former single-acting lock, consisting of approximately rectangular upper and lower lock heads with a passage width of 5.5 metres and a 40 metre long lock chamber. The lock was originally to bridge a terrain fall of 2.70 metres. The chamber, which was typically rectangular in layout, received a completely oval-shaped ground plan. For a small lock with little shipping traffic, the layout and execution are fairly remarkable.
Of the lock heads, the quay walls and broadly constructed wing walls are entirely built up in cross-bonded brickwork with partial application of hard stone for vulnerable points such as corners, for the strike posts and sills of the gates, for the door frame posts and for the coping stones to seal the walls. In each lock head there were point gates; the iron hinge rings remaining on either side recall this. For the currently still largely present operating mechanisms of the gates, toothed quadrants or racks were applied. The rack is an operating mechanism developed halfway through the nineteenth century in France and sporadically preserved in the south of the Netherlands. It consists of a curved wrought-iron rod which in this case lies underground in a built, open shaft and was connected to the gate via a coupure under the coping stones of the lock head. The toothed outer edges of the rod engage with a pinion which is connected to an above-ground toothed wheel. Via a windlass coupled to this and now disappeared, the pinion, and with it the rod and the gate, was set in motion. Furthermore, the lock heads are provided with some sockets for stop planks or sluice gates. With this the lock can be drained in the event of any necessary maintenance work.
The oval-shaped, deeply founded lock chamber walls are built up from basalt stone which is fairly unusual for this purpose. The sixty-centimetre long blocks are laid end-on. The upper edges are closed with lightly decorated hard-stone coping stones. In the chamber walls there are various haul pockets. These are hollowed-out blocks of natural stone built into the wall with a haul pin to keep the ships in place during locking. In the southern chamber wall is the original iron lock ladder let into the wall.
Valuation
The former lock is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical values due to the direct relationship with the reclamation and socio-economic development of the Peel area and of the directly surrounding municipalities. As part of the Afwateringskanaal between the Noordervaart and the Meuse, which as a spatial structure forms a historical element, the object is a special expression of historical infrastructure and the associated development of the transport sector in the Limburgian Peel area. From an industrial-archaeological perspective, the object is of importance for the typological development of single-acting locks.
The object has water engineering-historical value due to the special importance of the French operating mechanism, the lock design and the execution for the history of national lock construction. These are fairly remarkable for a small lock with little shipping traffic. The object has ensemble values as an essential component of a historically preserved and recognisable water-engineering ensemble along and at the Afwateringskanaal. The direct historical-spatial relationship with the nearby lock keeper's house (not protected by the state) is particularly illustrative in this regard.
The object possesses in Limburg, but also elsewhere, great water engineering-historical and typological rarity value since the present object is found but rarely and the specific combination here applied of basalt-stone chamber walls, an oval-shaped lock chamber, and an operating mechanism of French origin, which is also exceptional from a national perspective.
