Inleiding
Midden-19de-eeuwse GRENSPAAL op de hoek van de Veurseweg en de Horstlaan, is gelegen aan het begin van de oprijlaan naar het koetshuis Ter Horst. Z.K.H. Prins Frederik, tweede zoon van Koning Willem I verwierf in de periode 1838-1846 diverse landgoederen in Voorschoten (Ter Horst) en Wassenaar (o.a. Raaphorst, Eikenhorst, De Paauw, Backershagen, Groot Haesebroek, Wildrust, De Drie Papegaaien). Om de begrenzing van zijn omvangrijke landgoed aan te geven liet hij op de hoeken van zijn bezit grenspalen plaatsen, ter afbakening van zijn jachtgebied, waarvan nog slechts enkele op hun oorspronkelijke plaats staan. Deze paal, die de zuidoosthoek van het grondgebied van de prins markeert, is de pendant van een exemplaar bij het Laantje van Wissen, op de noordoosthoek.
Omschrijving
Op vierkant grondvlak, bijna twee meter hoge hardstenen grenspaal met kapelletjes en geprofileerde afdekking en basement. Aan de ene zijde in bas-reliëf aangegeven 'HOEK', aan andere zijde de tekst 'Eigen jagt van Z.K.H. prins Frederik'.
Waardering
De 19de-eeuwse GRENSPAAL is van algemeen belang vanwege zijn cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde door de typologische en functionele, ruimtelijke samenhang met de buitenplaats Ter Horst. Introduction
Mid-19th-century BOUNDARY STONE at the corner of the Veurseweg and the Horstlaan, is located at the beginning of the driveway to the coach house Ter Horst. H.R.H. Prince Frederik, second son of King Willem I, acquired in the period 1838-1846 various estates in Voorschoten (Ter Horst) and Wassenaar (including Raaphorst, Eikenhorst, De Paauw, Backershagen, Groot Haesebroek, Wildrust, De Drie Papegaaien). To indicate the boundaries of his extensive estate he had boundary stones placed at the corners of his property, to demarcate his hunting grounds, of which only a few still stand in their original location. This stone, which marks the south-eastern corner of the prince's territory, is the counterpart of a specimen at the Laantje van Wissen, on the north-eastern corner.
Description
On a square base, nearly two metres high hardstone boundary stone with small chapels and moulded coping and base. On one side indicated in bas-relief 'HOEK' (CORNER), on the other side the text 'Eigen jagt van Z.K.H. prins Frederik' (Private hunting ground of H.R.H. Prince Frederik).
Valuation
The 19th-century BOUNDARY STONE is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value through the typological and functional, spatial coherence with the country estate Ter Horst. The stone also has historical-geographical value as part of a larger ensemble of boundary stones, the 19th-century demarcation of the estate De Horsten, located within the municipalities of Voorschoten and Wassenaar.
