Inleiding

Description
Introduction
OFFICE and FACTORY BUILDING of 'F.W. Braat's Royal Steam Works for Work in Zinc and other Metals', built in the style of Business Expressionism according to a design by architect J. de Bie Leuveling Tjeenk from 1932. The Braat firm specialised in the manufacture of zinc building ornaments and artistic ironwork, and after the turn of the century, especially in iron and steel window frames. In the building, de Bie Leuveling Tjeenk incorporated no wood. The steel windows formed the business card of the firm. The artist Vilmos Húszàr designed the coloured stained glass in the stairwell. A lift has also been installed in the stairwell, with a rare, now prohibited, open cage.
In the nineteen seventies of the twentieth century, the building acquired an office function, whereby the interior was rebuilt in parts and whereby the front facade was completely renovated. The original detailing and material use were restored in the process. On the north-west side, the building forms part of the facade wall on the Hooikade at the front, while on the north-east side, an entirely new, transparent hall has been built. The north-east facade thus largely became an interior facade, with the original detailing and material use largely preserved. For the design of the frame workshops behind the factory, Braat invited J.A. Brinkman & L.C. Van der Vlugt in 1928-1930. With these architects, the factory had collaborated in 1925 for the construction of the Van Nellefabriek in Rotterdam, for which Braat supplied the steel facade. The frame workshops and the showroom on the Engelsestraat by J.A.G. van der Steur from 1915 were demolished at the end of the nineteen eighties.
Description
The office and factory building fits into the virtually continuous facade wall of the Hooikade. It is situated at the expansive 'waterplein' at the confluence of the Rijn-Schiekanaal and Delftse Schie, which developed at the end of the nineteenth century into the industrial centre of Delft.
The building has a composite floor plan, is wholly cellared and has three storeys under a flat roof. The third storey can be understood as a U-shape, with a short and a long wing that are not positioned at right angles to each other. With the second and even more with the first storey, the U-shape is built in. The short wing at the front comprises the entrance, the large factory spaces and in the second storey the management offices. In the longer wing at the rear is the stairwell with an open lift and various factory and office spaces. The building has a completely timber-free structure of reinforced concrete, yellow bricks with deep pointing and steel windows. The narrow vertical windows with steel glazing bars are set deep within the facade plane, thereby reinforcing the shadow effect. Likewise, broad rectangular windows are placed flush with or even projecting from the facade plane to emphasise the non-bearing character of the facade.
The asymmetrical front facade (east side) comprises three storeys, placed on a cellar storey, which is provided with a hardstone plinth. The third storey is recessed in relation to the first two storeys. Overhanging mouldings form the facade cornices.
The main entrance, whose doors have been modernised, is located to the right of centre in a projection. Above the canopy of the entrance is the broad window of the director's office. To the left of the projection is a narrow recessed strip, containing the semi-circular access to the cellar. In the second storey is an eight-light window. To the right of the projection stand eleven narrow windows in both storeys.
The third storey has a similar composition to the first two storeys, with the difference that the strip to the left of the projection is set further back and the window strips to the right of the projection are narrower and more numerous. This storey is provided with a far overhanging concrete canopy.
The asymmetrical rear facade comprises three storeys, provided with narrow windows set deep within the plane. On the far left, adjoining the recently built glass entrance hall of the GGD, the height of the facade steps back to two storeys. On the far right, set back slightly, is a three-storey-high vertical strip with abstract-geometric stained glass installed. This strip provides daylight penetration to the stairwell.
The asymmetrical left side facade borders a narrow alley, which forms the connection between the Hooikade and the rear grounds. The left side facade has a closed character. On the right in the first storey is a window with abstract-geometric stained glass. On the far left, the facade is provided with a chamfered corner.
The asymmetrical and stepped right side facade borders neighbouring buildings largely. The side facade of the long wing borders the tall glass conservatory. This conservatory is attached to the facade without major alterations.
The interior, like the exterior, is austere in character. Concrete columns and walls are provided with a cladding consisting of yellow tiles. Within the building are many preserved walls of steel and glass. In the stairwell is a steel lift installed with an open cage. The rear door in the stairwell features a special system allowing it to be used both as a swing door and as a flap door.
Valuation
The office and factory building is of general importance due to its cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning value.
The building has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a specific function, namely an office and factory building of a firm in the field of steel window frame production. As such, it is also a good example of a development in the construction of factory and office buildings. The object has architectural-historical value as an example of a building style, as a representative work in the oeuvre of architect J. de Bie Leuveling Tjeenk and due to the particular use of materials. The industrial object has urban planning value due to its particular location at the confluence of the Rijn-Schiekanaal and Delftse Schie.
The object is furthermore of importance due to the recognisability and the high degree of integrity of the principal form and detailing of the facades and an interior that is intact in parts, with particular emphasis on the rarity of the open lift cage.
