Inleiding

Description
Introduction
At the foot of the Sluisendijk, to the west of the village of Heinenoord, one of the smallest water towers in the Netherlands was built in 1910 to a design by J. Smit with the collaboration of engineer Visser. The merely 18 metres high WATER TOWER was intended solely for the drinking water supply of the village of Heinenoord. The tower is constructed in a restrained Neo-Romanesque style. The building underwent some modifications in the early 1990s as a result of an attempted conversion to a residential house. In this process, parts of the pumps were removed from the building, as well as the pipes in the middle section. Rectangles were removed from the walls of the iron flat-bottomed reservoir with a capacity of 50 cubic metres to promote daylight entry. Small rectangular windows were installed in the bitumen-covered roof surface. The lead weathercock was removed. The access door was renewed. In 1998 the ground at the foot of the building was paved with clinker bricks.
Description
The entirely free-standing water tower is situated on the north side of the Sluisendijk, to the west of the village of Heinenoord. The tower has a circular floor plan, a tapering base structure and a cantilevered cylindrical upper structure under a gently sloping, sixteen-sided conical roof. Within the tower is an iron flat-bottomed reservoir. The tower is constructed in red brick in header bond. The base structure of the tower has a rendered plinth and is articulated by two ashlar bands. A rounded arch frieze on ashlar quoins forms the transition to a series of cantilevered bands, partly of brick, partly of moulded ashlar. The cylindrical upper structure is clad with slate in ridge-and-furrow coverage. A sixteen-sided wooden gutter cornice on corbels forms the transition to the roof. In the base structure, the simple door is arranged on the east side in a rounded arch opening. At the height of this rounded arch, there are four small six-pane windows in the façade. Four small round windows are placed in the second ashlar band. Between the cantilevered bands of the upper structure there is a narrow band containing eight similar round windows. Finally, four three-pane windows are installed in the slate-covered façade surface.
Valuation
The water tower is of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value as a characteristic expression of a specific function, as a link in the development of the water tower, and because of the importance the tower held for the local drinking water supply and because of the applied building style, which was characteristic of many water towers of that time. The water tower is of urban planning value as a landmark at the edge of the village of Heinenoord. The water tower is moreover important because of its recognisability and reasonable degree of integrity.
